Sometimes you can reset the engine warning light by disconnecting the battery for ten minutes or more (be sure you have your stereo unlock code if needed).
That is not a good solution, it is better to diagnose and eventually fix the problem.
Have the car computer scanned with a code reader, the codes you get in return witll tell you exactly where to find the problem.

To get the codes the code reader must be connected to the car computer.
sometimes on Bmw you may need a Interface 16 pin Adapter, depending on the code reader.

hi there after a 500 mile trip i got up this mor and the eml light is on , when i put my foot down the car shudders and wont excelarate please some advice
I have a 1996 328is with a similar issue. Under harder acceleration, it will occasionally misfire and turn on the check engine light. While the light is on, the car will have reduced power and will shudder under any kind of acceleration. The light will often shut off on its own after a while (10-50 miles), and the engine will return to normal.
I think it the computer is detecting a misfire and retarding the timing or shutting down the affected cylinders to avoid damaging the catalytic converters.
The problem got slightly better when I replaced the fuel filter, so I suspect I might have a fuel issue. However, it could also be a spark plug or ignition coil issue. I will check/replace those soon.
