BMW Z3 1,9 Litre Idle Problem when engine is warm

Hello:

I recently acquired a 1998 Z3 1.9 liter in immaculate condition. It has 50,000 km, never winter driven and mostly driven on the highway. It is a 5 spd standard and has no air conditioner which might affect the idle.

It idles roughly with RPM varying from 700 to about 400 when warmed up. It has never stalled but just runs roughly. Sometimes it idles ok and other times not so. It has has a full tune up, fuel filter, air filter, new spark plugs, new spark plug wires and a reverse flush of the injectors - all done by BMW dealer. It has been checked for vaccum leaks. Does this engine just idle that way?

It runs well on the road.

What can I try next?

Thanks for any suggestions you can give.

Jacki

SOURCE: Car starts then immediately idles down and shuts off

Fuel Injector cold start valve, this will directly affect the problem you are having.

Good luck, and let me know if there is anything else. Also, replacing the distributor cap and rotor are never a bad idea. along with the plugs and wires. with the price of fuel, it never hurts to get better mpg.

SOURCE: HOW COULD I READ CHECK ENGINE CODE ON A 1986 BMW 325E???

You can't use a tool to pull codes from an '87 BMW 325(e). You have the 2.7 liter and your DME, or computer is a Motronic. If you had a 325i, then a tool could read the codes because the computer was upgraded that year to a Motronic 1.1 system with a round plug in under the screw cap on the driver's side under the hood. The only tool you can buy is the one for resetting the service interval light and resetting the oil change light. To answer your question about going about finding your driveability problem would be to get a BMW Bentley Manual. This manual shows you how to use a standard voltmeter to check everything from your computer plug in. Your computer is located above the glovebox.

Good Luck,

SOURCE: starting and rough idle

I had a very similar issue. Mine ended up being my "lower crankcase vent tube" It apparently had a hole in it that was causing oil to spew all over (and causing my valve cover gasket to leak as well due to a pressure issue). Got that replaced last Friday (my mechanic discovered it when he was replacing the belts I slung on Wednesday) and the car has started perfect ever since.

SOURCE: bmw misfiring

I would check your tps(Throttle positioning sensor) to see if its bad. That's what it sounds like.

Hi there my C55 use every 1500 Km one liter of oil is this normal

Oil consumption is outside specification, and needs around a litre of oil every 7 500km, not unusual for a race-bred engine. But, if you are only getting 1 litre for only 1500, you might want to change brand of oil, or ensure you are using the right type of oil.......

Transmission slow to go into first gear unless auto is warmed up

change fluid & filter. no dipstick, sealed tranny. can remove both pans from underneath to access filter.

It is a GM 4L30E trans. used on Isuzu Rodeo and Cadillac Catera. BMW, in their inifinite wisdom, markets it as lifetime fluid. The second biggest bunch of **** advertising that ever was. Heat and friction will wear out ANY fluid!

BTW, it will delay shifting into highest gear when cold. this is normal
