P0496 EVAP Flow During Non Purge Condition

You need to take your car to Autozone and have them read then clear the code before worrying about anything,it needs to come back on to be a hard code,Make sure you tighten your gas cap three or four clicks past tight

DTC P0496 - EVAPORATIVE EMISSION (EVAP) SYSTEM FLOW DURING NON-PURGE

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
This DTC tests for undesired intake manifold vacuum flow to the evaporative emission (EVAP) system. The control module seals the EVAP system by commanding the EVAP canister purge valve Closed and the EVAP canister vent valve Closed. The control module monitors the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor to determine if a vacuum is being drawn on the EVAP system. If vacuum in the EVAP system is more than a predetermined value within a predetermined time, this DTC sets.

THIS CODE ID FOR A 3.6L engine

P0496 evap system flow during non purge, and this is the reason you have also P0300. Your solutiion is just the purge solenoid, In other word the system purge when it was not suppose and created a random misfire code P0300. If you have a under hood sticker the purge solenoid sould be listed there,if not it is on top of the throttle body.either the solenoid got stuck open and carburator cleaner can help clear it or it just worn

It is located under the car near the gas tank on a tray with the fuel vapor storage cannister

the p0496 means that the evap system flow during non-purge first check ur gas cap this can cause the check engine code if cap is good and on tight than the usual culprit is either evap purge solenoid and or canister vent solenoid sticking not expensive to replace by self in driveway but before u do check with a dealer in area and advise about code to see if covered should be since its an 08 evap should be covered [dont know mileage and or condition of truck which makes a difference on warranty ]

P0496 is not a gas cap, problem is with the purge vent solenoid (on intake manif) or purge vent valve (under car by fuel tank). Most likely the vent valve. Depending on your vehicle/VIN you may be eligible for the 10 year/120k mile warranty Caddy just came out with but is keeping a tight lip on. See bulletin #09205 dated 3-11-2010. Check the gas cap,also,it could mean the evap system is not working,or you have run out of gas recently,if all this checks out ok,then the tank is not venting properly.
