98 ford escort ticking never loses power nor sluggish.pulled each each sparkplug ticking never stopped.what could it be

You mention a "ticking" sound,,is this from the top or bottom of engine..?

Does the ticking go on acceleration or increase with engine speed..?

A ticking noise from the top usually indicates camshaft/valve noise..

Run your engine until at normal temperature, then turn off and leave for 5 minutes for oil to settle..

Make sure your car is on level ground and check your oil level..wipe dipstick and check it again, make sure you push the dipstick all the way in an re check oil level. Top up if necessary.

The best thing to do is remove old oil filter. Drop the old oil and fit a new filter, top up with new oil, run the car and check oil level again, top up if necessary.

Low oil and old oil can wear thin and cause ticking noise from top of engine, and will also NOT PROTECT your engine...oil is the blood of your car, check levels weekly at most and change every 12 months or as recommended by your car booklet.. Use the BEST oil you can afford.

Oil-pump - engine shut-down - opened valve cover - burnt and abused looking-

Not the oil,the filter or the pump

You say always sluggish-- but no mention of working
on engine performance or doing any testing to find
out why !

You say opened valve cover & looked gunked up

So I assume you bought it that way & your done out of the gate

Abuse & no oil changes since new by original owner

Now you do a cylinder leak down test to see if the valves seal
Then if good you look at all data with a scan tool

You may be able to wash down the gunk on the head, replace the oil
pump if you like, clean out the oil pan & just keep going, new spark
plugs,ignition coils,O2 Sensors,exhaust converter & more.

But why, it is too old & will cost too much

Maybe you will have to pull the head to clean it up along with the other items

Sounds like a case of neglect to me & too much work for a low end
13 year old vehicle

How long and easy is it to rebuild oil pump on 94 grand caravan 3.8l

Don't bother. Replace the unit.
3.0 liter
The oil pump assembly used on this engine is mounted at the front of the crankshaft. The oil pump also retains the crankshaft front oil seal.
  1. Remove the accessory drive belts.
  2. Remove the timing belt cover and timing belt. Refer to the timing belt removal and installation procedures in this section.
  3. Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
  4. Remove the oil pump mounting bolts (5), and remove oil pump assembly. Mark mounting bolts for proper installation during reassembly.

To install:
  1. Clean the oil pump and engine block gasket surfaces thoroughly.
  2. Position a new gasket on pump assembly and install on cylinder block. Make sure correct length bolts are in proper locations and tighten all bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm).
  3. Install the crankshaft sprocket and timing belt. Recheck engine timing marks.
  4. Install the timing belt covers. For more details, refer to the timing belt cover installation procedures.
  5. Install the accessory drive belts.
  6. Refill the crankcase and start the engine.
  7. Check for correct engine oil pressure and for any oil leakage.
3.3 and 3.8 liter engines

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the dipstick.
  2. Raise the vehicle and support safely. Drain the oil and remove the oil pan.
  3. Remove the oil pickup.
  4. Remove the chain case cover.
  5. Disassemble the oil pump as required.

To install:
  1. Assemble the pump. Tighten the cover screws to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm).
  2. Prime the oil pump by filling the rotor cavity with fresh oil and turning the rotors until oil comes out the pressure port. Repeat a few times until no air bubbles are present.
  3. Install the chain case cover.
  4. Clean out the oil pickup or replace as required. Replace the oil pickup O-ring and install the pickup to the pump.
  5. Install the oil pan.
  6. Install the dipstick. Fill the engine with the proper amount of oil.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable and check the oil pressure. Check for any oil leaks.
for the 3.3 you can rebuild, 3.0 - replace.

How to replace the water pump on a 1992 geo tracker 1.6 liter engine

Water Pump - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
During these procedures, identify all components removed from the engine so that they may be reinstalled in their original positions. If discarding the old components so that new components can be installed, identifying the old items is not necessary.

1.3L and 1.6L Engines

  1. Remove the timing belt cover, timing belt, tensioner, plate and spring.
  2. Remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  3. Remove the one (1.6L MFI engines) or two (1.3L and 1.6L TFI engines) small rubber seals from between the water pump and the oil pump, and the water pump and the cylinder head.
  4. If necessary for clearance, remove the oil level dipstick tube retaining bolt from the engine block and the alternator adjusting brace.
e6f342c.jpg

Fig. 1: Exploded view of the water pump mounting

WARNING Do NOT use a prybar between the water pump housing and the engine block to separate the two components; this can cause scratches and/or gouges, which can prevent proper sealing.
  1. Pull the water pump off of the engine block. If the water pump is difficult to remove from the engine block, use a soft-faced mallet to tap the water pump housing until it loosens.
Do not disassemble the water pump; if the water pump is damaged or defective, the entire unit is replaced.
  1. Thoroughly clean the water pump gasket mating surfaces of old gasket material and corrosion.
To install:
  1. Along with a new gasket, install the water pump on the engine block. Tighten the water pump mounting bolts to 88-115 inch lbs. (10-13 Nm).
  2. On 1.3L and TFI 1.6L engines, install two new rubber seals: one between the water pump and oil pump, and the other between the water pump and the cylinder head. The MFI 1.6L engines only use one rubber seal, located between the water and oil pumps.
  1. If removed, install the alternator adjusting brace and the oil level dipstick retaining bolt.
  2. Install the timing belt, tensioner, plate, spring and cover.

Hope helps (remember comment and rated this).

Today when I was driving my car it began to vibrate loudly and then it acted like it was going to stall. It sounds strange when it is running and when I press on the gas, it is sluggish, very sluggish

I'm wondering if the motor is shot. W/ car on level surface, check oil level (w/ car off, pull out dipstick, wipe off w/ clean rag, reinsert, pull out and see if oil level is low, or doesn't show up on the dipstick. How many miles on the car? It could be a major engine problem.countrycurt0
