Driving on highway and it just quit. Let it set for a while and it started and ran but quit again in about 20 miles. Had to tow it home, let ti set for about an hour and it started and ran again.
I am thinking fuel pump or fuel filter. What else could it be?
Do you know if there is a current issue with the fuel pump overheating? I had heard that on this model the fuel pump overheated and failed with less than a 1/2 tank of fuel. SOunds more like vapor lock issue to me.

Well I am back again. CHanged the Fuel FIlter and it was real dirty--lots of gunk came out of the old one. Drove the truck about 2 miles--sun shinning but the way--and it quit again--this time like you just reached up and turned off the key. IT will spin but won't start. Let it set overnight--started and ran just fine. Now it is back in the drive way and I am scratching my head---any ideas?Well I am back again. I tried everything--took it to the Ford Shop, they replaced the Fuel Inertia switch which had been on a recall list, as well as the fuel pump. Seems to have been one of the two issues.

Hi, You didn't say what the weather was like when his prob started? My bet is it was raining? If it was the fuel filter, it wouldn't recover. The fuel pump would need to heat all the gas in the tank to over-heat! There is a fuel regulator that will pull the same stunt. v8 on top right of engine, 6 on the left. You can track it down from the fuel 'incoming' fuel line. That's the larger one [in most cases] If you have an ohm meter, you can check between body and engine, fuel tank to body, and from body to frame. If you get a reading less than when the leads from the meter are shorted together, run a new ground. OK Frankster016Hi, You didn't say what the weather was like when his prob started? Kathleen, I can tell you this because I work at a dealer myself and through the years when a problem comes in like yours and we can't find anything wrong its because whatever is causing the issue is not setting a code. There is only a few things that can cause a problem like yours and not set a code. (1) Fuel pumps can cause intermittent problem but will never set a code. After running for a while they will simply stop working but then after sitting a while will cool down and work fine again. (2) Exhaust issues. After the exhaust system has a lot of years and miles on it, the debris inside it can restrict the air flow and in some cases cause the vehicle to die and run poorly after a restart, but after sitting awhile the debris falls back down and the vehicle runs fine again until it happens again. NOTE: I'm not saying that either of these is your problem BUT, you have to start somewhere. Your only other option would be to let it die until the check engine light come on and then you'll know for sure it has set a code. After it sets a code then the dealer should be able to find your problem. The problem is that if its one of the issues I mentioned it will never set a code. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Kathleen.
Does your motor have a timing belt or chain? If it is a belt and it was mostly highway running you should be able to get quite a few mor miles out of it. As a rule of thumb, city driving, jackrabbit starts, lots of cold weather driving(bellow -20f) and towing belt should be changed at around 80,000 miles. If is light duty driving 100,000 miles. If it is a chain you might never need to change it.
if it is a flex fuel vehicle, it most likely is the flex fuel sensor and/ or connector- it's located on the driver's framerail just behind the door.hope this helps and good luck
It really depends on the type of driving you do most of. Highway miles very little wear, mostly city driving alot of wear.
Rule of thumb is usually front around 30,000 and rear around 50,000.
