SOURCE: rotor

You do not need to pull the axle nut loose the rotor will slide off wheel hub assembly.you might need to tap it off if been on a long time.all that has to come off is the caliper

On my 2004 mercury mountaineer if anyone knows what size socket fits the rear axle nut let me know I have been told a 36 mm but it seems like it's a little too big for the nut

36mm is the consensus of opinion, but in reality, it is the socket that 'FITS'! Most socket sets come in metric and imperial, you use that one that is the best fit.

What size is the axle nut on a 97 jeep grand cherokee 4X4 5.2? Also what size are the E-torx on the back side of the hub?

my socket set goes to 1-1/4": and 36mm.
my e-torx kit has all sizes, one can need.
with no sets. you must measure them. it's not covered in the FSM.
only 175ft/lbs on the axle nut and need for a torque wrench that big.
kit 1:

the better question is ,is the axle nut SAE or metric.
most real Chrysler built are metric.
so that big nut, at that torque needs 1/2' drive
and the torque wrench to match.
id bet this covers that
http://www.harborfreight.com/13-piece-12-drive-metric-deep-wall-impact-socket-set-67904.html

you could off the hub cap and measure the nut, with a metric rule.
the external torx same. with a caliper measure the head.
then use the e-torx table to mach it.
bet the first ever to post that. its rare to ask.
most folks just have the 2 sets. ( a life time investment if ever there was)
here is the table i uses, if ever
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torx

good luck working with only 2 bits.

What size socket do I need to remove the front wheel spindle nut from a 2000 pontiac grand prix

If you're trying to loosen the large axle nut, in the center of the rotor, it's either a 32mm or a 36mm socket.
