I have a 1988 honda accord 2 door hatchback and the wheels wont turn but the steering wheel will but it thump clicks when it does. any ideas on how to fix this

Either the steering shaft coupler at the steering gear is broken or it is loose on the bolt has fallen out completely. The steering rack can also be defective but that would be rare unless you hit a curb very hard.

Assuming the car is not running and you are trying to start it, sometimes the steering wheel is locked from the wheel thrying to turn back on itself and this won't allow the key to turn. Try turning the steering wheel all the way to the left or right then while the wheel turned, try to turn the key.

To fix your problem, you have to turn the steering wheel either to the left or right as much as you can, then try to turn the key in the ignition. When the steering wheel locks, the key won't turn. By manually holding the steering wheel out of the lock position, the key will turn again and you're steering column will be back to normal.

When the airbag light (SRS) is on or blinks it means a fault has occurred in the system and the airbag diagnostic monitor has disabled the system, the most common problem that turns the light on is a break in the connection to the steering wheel mounted airbag, this is due to a rotating ribbon contact that breaks under the steering wheel that connects the airbag to the wiring harness and the diagnostic monitor, the part is called the clock spring contact, a coiled up ribbon electrical contact that turns with the steering wheel while maintaining a mechanical connection to the airbag mounted on the steering wheel, to replace this part you must disarm the airbag system and remove the steering wheel, this requires a special steering wheel puller tool and that you disarm the airbag system before you start the work, to do this disconnect the battery negative cable for 1/2 hour prior.

yes switch is bad replace it pull cover off from around steering collum should be screws holding it on you may haveto pull steering wheel but haven't done one in solong i can't remember

try to replace the wheel bearings.

TRY TURNING STEERING WHEEL LEFT OR RIGHT WHILE TURNING KEY, especially if your wheels are turned to either side and is not straight. Turn to the same side that they wheels are turned to if they are not straight. If that doesn't work that ignition lock may be at fault and you will need to replace. Good Luck

Try jiggling the steering wheel back and forth while turning the key.
