I have a 1988 honda hatchback and the wheels wont turn but the steering wheel will. when i turn it it goes thump really fast depending on how fast i turn the wheel. it sounds like the steering shaft teels are stripped but i am not sure, any ideas or comments on what this might be?
It sounds like you have sheared off the input shaft to the steering control rack under the car, you will need to get under the car and look.
where do i go to look. i am not used to imports
Under the car at the rear of the engine area, the steering column comes through the firewall and a shaft connects to the steering rackm see if it is connected to the stub shaft at the top of the steering rack
thank you.

Steering rack is collapsed inside the head ,doesnt this vehicle have to pass a yearly safety mechanical inspection in your neck of the woods ?
When the airbag light (SRS) is on or blinks it means a fault has occurred in the system and the airbag diagnostic monitor has disabled the system, the most common problem that turns the light on is a break in the connection to the steering wheel mounted airbag, this is due to a rotating ribbon contact that breaks under the steering wheel that connects the airbag to the wiring harness and the diagnostic monitor, the part is called the clock spring contact, a coiled up ribbon electrical contact that turns with the steering wheel while maintaining a mechanical connection to the airbag mounted on the steering wheel, to replace this part you must disarm the airbag system and remove the steering wheel, this requires a special steering wheel puller tool and that you disarm the airbag system before you start the work, to do this disconnect the battery negative cable for 1/2 hour prior.
