A clutch cable doesn't take much to install. Who told you $600.00?? You don't have to take the trans. loose to do this. All you do is unhook the cable from pedal and unhook if from the trans. This job should only take you an hour if you've never done it before. How long has the clutch been in your car?

AUTOMATIC TRANS DRAIN PLUGS HAVE NOT BEEN USED FOR YEARS, LAST ONE WERE IN THE 60'S, U MUST DROP THE PAN OFF TO CHANGE THE FLUID, A VERY MESSY JOB, I USE AN OLD PLASTIC GARBAGE LID WITH HOLES DRILLED IN THE CENTER TO CTACH THE FLUID. WHEN U REFILL ADD LESS THAN U TAKE OUT AND GET THE TRANS HOT BEFORE U TOP IT OFF, IF U OVERFILL THE TRANS U CAN DAMAGE IT,

Firstly, check all the bearings that the belt rolls over to make sure that none have seized. If all are free, then your P/S belt may have been loose, and the load when the steering was used was more than the belt could transmit, so it started slipping. Get a new belt fitted and tensioned correctly. From memory, this belt also does the A/C, so maybe try turning that off to reduce the load on the belt until you can get it fixed.
