Cooling fans will not turn on

Cooling fans do work & also the relays

  • Anonymous Feb 05, 2012

I also have replaced the thermostat & coolant temp sensor & the cooling system is all flowing No water in the oil no water pump problem or leaks

  • Anonymous Feb 05, 2012

what i would do is take the electrical connector off the fan take a peice of wire and clip to the battery post that is located on the passenger side under the hood. clip the other end to one of the terminals on the fan take another peice of wire and clip to the other terminal and ground it to the frame somewhere. this procedure will confirm that the fan works. if it doesn't spin then you will need a new fan if it does then check the fan fuses. If those are good you may have a short in the wiring somewhere.

Most likely need to replace the coolant temp sensor. sensor is located on the driver side on the head closest to the firewall.

2004 Venture Chevrolet minivan cooling fan circut

Are you talking about the radiator fan? How hot does the engine get in degrees F? Some makes and models, the radiator fan won't turn on till about 220 degrees F. Check for applicable trouble codes, see if any code that refers to the radiator fan circuit or coolant temp sensor? Some of the national brand auto stores will check codes for free.

Of course, as far as overheating in general, you have the thermostat--water pump and other possible issues. Are you losing coolant?

Coolling fans dont work

Check for a blown fuse----look at it & test it
Check for & TEST any fan relays-have to remove them to do so
Then unplug the cooling fan & put battery voltage to it

If the fuse is good, the relay works, the fan works, you may need
a wiring diagram & do some internet searching to find a temp sensor or switch--odds are it will be in the radiator or cooling system somewhere.

Check for wire connectors being off

Have to check the radiator for leaks & the coolant system
for leaks & at least partially remove the radiator, to get rid of
leaves & other road dibris, bird feathers & such

No, the fans have separate relays. You have to use the wiring diagram to sort it out. The pcm turns on the cooling fan relay with a ground signal on a purple/black wire when the temp sensor signal rises too high.

AC and Cooling Fans Not Working

Try installing a jumper across the N/O terminal at the relay socket. Temp sensor in the radiator or in the thermostat housing supplies the signal for the relay the other relay signal is supplied by A/C in on position. both fans will run continuous with A/C on. One fan runs intermittent relative to water temp. Be careful not to blow a head gasket. If you leave the jumpers in place, the fans will stop when the ignition is turned off, save the engine until you isolate the relay signal problem. then simply remove jumpers and reinstall the relays

My 2005 equinox cooling fans come on for a few seconds &shut off making engine over heat &OVERHEATING What is the problem?

Should be a relay somewhere in the engine compartment - may be failing. You may be able to switch with another relay to diagnose.
Check your owners manual under fuses and relays.

Code P0481

Both radiator fan relay's ????? There are three relay's !
DTC P0481Cooling Fan Relay 2 Control Circuit
Circuit Description
Output Driver Modules (ODMs) are used by the PCM to turn on many of the current-driven devices that are needed to control various engine and Transaxle functions. Each ODM is capable of controlling up to 7 separate outputs by applying ground to the device which the PCM is commanding on. DTC P0481set indicates an improper voltage level has been detected, which controls the Cool Fan 2 and Cool Fan 3 Relays.

Check cooling fan maxifuse 15 amp. This fuse supply's B+ voltage too cool fan relay's 2 & 3 control side . The PCM supply's a ground to energize these two relay's , the PCM is not seeing the correct voltage that it should be . The fuse could be the problem , an open circuit , the transistor or driver as GM calls it output driver module . The number 1 relay is working fine , with A/C on # 1 relay is turned on or energized by the PCM for low speed operation .
There is a good video on youtube on how this three relay cooling fan system works an how to trouble shoot .

There are three fuses and two relays for your coolant fan. They should all be in your underhood fuse box. They may not be marked "coolant fan", so check them all, (2) 60 amp , (1) 20 amp, (1) 15 amp. If all the fuses are good, you may have a bad fan switch (temp sensor). It tells the fan when to turn on, follow the wire from the fan motor to find it.

Yes, in the underhood electrical center, a 60 amp with a red wire going to relay 1 and a 20 amp with an orange wire going to relay 1 and a 15 amp with a brown wire going to relay 2 and another 60 amp with a red wire going to relay 2. The diagram doesn't show a temp sensor, but it does show dark blue and dark green wires going to the power train control module, so it must get the temp input from there. The second fan usually comes on when the A/C is turned on and it apparently gets that signal from there also. Hope this helps.
