2003 BMW X5 radio display lights

The lights on the radio display of my BMW X5 are starting to go out. Some of them are light and some of them are not. It makes it very hard to read what radio station you are on and how to work the other functions of the radio such as the CD player. Do you know what the problem could be or how to fix this?

There is no factory recall on this. You will have to either send it off to be fixed, or buy a new one. A new one is >650$ and rebuilds take weeks to return. I have one rebuilt with the permanent fix. I replaced it with a nav system. I will sell it for $150. The change out is very easy.

BMW has a free fix for that! It's a factory recall with the pixels. Check with your dealer.

There is no recall for this. If the pixels are out on the odometer, they should repair it. Radio- no dice. Any way, the root cause is the cable that attaches to the LED screen is a clamped ribbon cable. The connection points corrode and the lights go out. This is why sometimes your iPhone charger doesn't work and you have to clean the plug. The solution is to remove the radio and send it to an aftermarket company that specializies in this. They will replace the cable connection with soldered joints and the fix will be permanent. BMW started doing this in 2004 so that's why you see this fault on 2003 and older. I have one already repaired with the permanent fix. I replaced it with a Nav vsystem. I will sell for 150$. The replacement is super easy. Remove the left knob. There is a small hole behind this knob. Use a small Allen key and turn 1/4 turn to unlock and pullradiostraight out. To replace just slide radio in until it clicks.

Bmw x5 2003 , rear brake lights always on ( not the center one) , horn does not work , radio does not work . this all started with I had to jump start my car

Never jump start with another vehicle. always use a jump box. If that battery is more than 3 years old replace it. A bad battery will damage the alternator (full field condition). Check all the fuses. Un plug the brake light switch to see if brake lights go out. If they go out replace the switch, make sure the switch is adjusted correctly . It is located under the dash at the brake pedal arm, the plug will have 2 wires in the plug.

Dashboard lights not coming on and the radio not working

Sounds like a ground wire has been pulled loose under the dash. The ground wire on automotive is white and they are connected to the firewall with a small bolt(10mm head) and just need tightened up or reconnected. ALWAYS check the grounds first.

I recently had my 2003 bmw x5 jumped due to dead battery from leaving my lights on. since then i cannot get sound to come out of my speakers. radio is on but now sound. please help.

Try disconnecting the battery for 10 min and see if resetting the system fixes your problem . You will loose all your presets but you can reset them, if it works Good Luck

2000 bmw x5 nav screen blank. radio works but no

I know this is an old thread, but my 2006 325i Nav screen went bank also, but the radio still played. I noticed the glove box light and trunk light did not turn on also. I was told from mechanics is was probably a CID module for $2200, even though I mentioned the glove box and trunk light light were out and specifically inquired about a fuse. The mechanics never checked the fuses, because I checked my fuses in the glove box and found the fuse 61 marked with a BMW symbol that looks like light bulb was blown. The Nav screen started back up once the fuse was changed.
