I have a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier the trunk wont close and latch down and my little lever on the side of the driver side seat I can move up and down how do I fix it I don't think the mechanism is sticky it kinda seems like its broken should another one if so where please and thank you for whoever gives the solution!

tyr to workit by hand after spraying it with wd 40..that may free it up..they normally stick due to no lubricant.

You will probably have to disassemble the rear seat to fix the latch. The lower seat cusion has latches that can be pushed in with a flat-blade screwdriver. If you pull up on the seat a little, you can see them. They are made of white plastic. There is a button on the front of them that will release the lower cusion. I usually use a flat-blade screwdriver to push on the latch buttons because they can be really hard to push by hand. Once the seat cusion is out, you can access the bolts that hold the seat back assembly in. You can remove these bolts and remove the entire seat back assembly.. Once the seat back is loose, you will have to reach around the seat assembly to remove the push-clips that hold the trunk-side carpet to the back side of the seat. You will then be able to work on the seats to repair the latch. (pull cords)

check for latches on the top or the seats both sides and check for a lock below the window not sure but ????

YOU HAVE SMALL BOLTS HOLDING LATCH IN PLACE.THEY ARE LOOSE THROWING OFF ADJUSTMENT KEEPING TRUNK FROM CLOSING.YOU NEED TO READJUST LATCH.TIGHTEN BOLTS BACK.YOU DONE.

There is a possibility that the remote latch cable is stuck (lubrication is gone) . With a screwdriver, NOT the fingers, try to return manually the latch, to its open position (instead of the pull open position). If you push it too far, it will go into locked position, and when you pull down the trunk lid, it wont reach its normal closed position. In that case, pull the latch back open, with the remote lever. Should you manage to close the trunk properly, spray some WD40 or some lubricant on the latch assembly.

you have somehow tripped the latch into the closed position while the lid was up. use your key to reopen the latch then close lid normally.

use duct tape to hold the lid down.....just kidding. insert the key into the lock and see if it will UNLOCK.

take the trunk key and turn it like you are opening the trunk, now looking at the latch, it will be "UP". take a small screwdriver and put in in the slot and pull the latch down, it should come DOWN. and now shousd just look like a big slot that the "striker" will go up into. now try to close the trunk. if the latch still has a problem, have it checked by a shop.

make sure the latch it hits when closing is not locked shut already, try unlocking it agin before you close it

Make sure it is not binding/sticking where you pull the release cable.

Drench the entire works in WD-40. Push it back and forth until it moves with no resistance.

Make sure the part that hooks onto the latch hasn't come loose enough to not slide over when it makes contact.

If that doesn't work, take the whole thing off. You'll have to anyway to replace it. Chances are with it disassembled you'll see what's wrong.
