SOURCE: Jerking while driving

If you park your vehicle for a long time, you run the risk of having contaminated fuel in the tank. This happened to a car my wife purchased, and it was the last thing I found. It proved to be the problem. What you need to do is remove the fuel from the tank and then have the tank flushed. Fill it with fresh fuel and replace the fuel filter.

You may have a failing Mass Air Flow sensor, a quick test is to unplug the connector and drive the truck, if it runs better well their you go, the way this works is that the engine processor has failure mode strategy build in, so it substitutes a good signal for the missing one. After that just clear the codes and replace the sensor. The other issue may be fuel pressure, check the pressure and make sure it is ok under a load, a new fuel filter would poss. cure the issue also.

You may need to look for a vacuum leak or double check your timing advance/****** is operating correctly.Use a can of carburettor cleaner lightly sprayed around suspect areas,do with engine running and if there is a leak it will stop the engine running. As far as the fuel system goes crimp the fuel return line with appropriate tool so you dont damage it and see if it improves. If it does you do have a fuel problem with the pump or the pressure relief valve

SOURCE: 2005 ford ranger fuel pump relay gets hot and engine dies

Like Laurie Mack said. It is the inertia switch below the glove box. Here is some funny information. DON'T change the fuel pump first. Interesting fact: I bought the new inertia switch from Ford and the install instructions that came with it said to install the switch in the protected area to the right where the fuses are. It is like Ford knows it was a dumb place to put the inertia switch, but they won't let you know until after you buy a new one. I have read at least 20 other people on here that had the same problem I just had.

Car chugs and jerks like crazy while cruising

Determine whether the jerking is engine or transmission related. One way to determine if it is the transmission lock up converter is acting erratically is to down shift out of OD. And see if jerking persist. If it goes away suspect transmission to have problems with torque converter or TCC solenoid . If it doesn't go away determine whether or not the engine sounds to be misfiring. If so vehicle may require a tune up. Many vehicles can be diagnosed for free at your local Auto Zone.

92 Grand Marquis chugs and dies when at an idle. Also jerks alot

The throttle speed control valve must be cleaned. The valve is located near the throttle body throat. It has an oval flange with two bolts. Unplug it, take it off and clean it out with throttle body cleaner. You will notice a big difference. This is a common issue with this engine.
