My 02 Avalanche will not start every once in a while. It spudders like it wants to but takes about 12 times before it starts. Mostly when below a 1/4 of a tank. Anyone have any ideas ?

I have a couple thoughts based on issues with noise coming from the rear end of my vehicles.
I have had rocks stuck in the tread of my tires which make popping noise..
Universal joints, crack brake pads, wheel bearing and loose lug nuts.

Try checking the condition of the following:


1) Spark plugs, leads and coils.
2) Air filter
3) Fuel filter.

Correction

1. Diagnose the power steering concern. Refer to Symptoms - Power Steering System (SI Document ID #670351).
2. Replace the steering gear with a newly designed steering gear. See the parts information below. Refer to Power Steering Gear Replacement (SI Document ID #742314).

try changing out the spark plugs if you haven't already done so

You may want to check into a recall!! If the problem occurs during accleration between 20-40 mph, Call your local dealer.

Oh the list of things it could be is pretty long.
Lets start with hmm bad TPS or plugged fuel filter? or underperforming fuel pump?

Lets see if it was really sudden id start with checking the TPS among other things.
If it happened kinda slow then id start with the fuel filter.
Poor voltage to the ignition system can sometimes have that effect too.

Possible bad engine crank sensor. Electronic Control Module provides initial timing for start then depends on the crank sensor once started for timing and firing

Same problem with my 02 Northface - both sides now. Had right isde fixed and it came back worse. Now that it is over 100K miles, Chevy won't help. Only perm solution is the fender replacement.
