Yes and no. The vats system is not reprogramable like the newer passlock and passkey systems. It must be replaced with a original GM part. No after market. If not, the antitheft system can't pass on the correct signal from the key to the theft deterrent module, and the antitheft system will shut off the starter and/or the fuel injectors. It IS possible to bypass this system. This link explains.

SOURCE: Lost ignition key for 2001 Saab9-3 Convrt

try taking the CID/TWICE fuse out and as long as the key works mechanically in the tumbler you should be all set. They are nice cars to drive, but these stupid little security things are a big hassle and ****. I mean how many thieves out there and how frequently does a 5 year old saab get stolen? Let alone the stupid factory cassette player, which incidentally also is code protected.

SOURCE: How can i reprogram a new ignition switch cylinder?

Well sorry to tell you if you have a PATS key for your ignition you will have to take it to your Ford dealer to get your keys programmed. My advise to you is just to get 1 key programmed then tape it to your steering column and get regular keys from the hardware store cut to fit your ignition that way if you misplace it it only costs you $2.00 to get a new 1 made.

SOURCE: i need to reset the security system but dont have

30-Minute Learn Procedure 1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. 2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON; the vehicle will not start. 3. Observe the SECURITY tell tale light. After approximately 10 minutes, the light will turn OFF. 4. Turn OFF the ignition switch, and wait 5 seconds. 5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 - two more times - for a total of 3 cycles of 10 minutes. 3x10 = 30 minutes. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch turn from OFF to CRANK Important: Turn the Ignition Switch OFF. The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle. 6. Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password. 7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles. Without a scan tool you may have momentary starter interruptions while history clears itself. Good luck and hope this helps, keep me posted, be glad to help.

Have the starter tested! Check the cables to see if they are in good condition. Check the cable that goes to the starter. They all need tight connections.Don`t know the year, make and model. but older cars have a solenoid switch that is not on the starter.

Key and starting problems. Do I have a bad VAT?

If you want to keep the VATS system in factory working condition (normally recommended) then a VATS replacement is the answer IF the shops diagnosis is correct, BUT generally speaking ALL GM products built in that decade with the VATS system fail for the same reason sooner or later and it's not usually the VATS itself, but in the key resistor reading portion of the ignition switch.
My 97 Riviera had the same difficulty. Sometimes starts perfect. Other times is totally dead, not like a weak battery, but no fuel pump, no ignition, no starter at all. I noticed the 'security light was on on the dash and if I wait for 3 minutes the security resets itself and the car starts fine.
If these symptoms fit then it is the key reader and not the VATS itself.
There are 4 options if this is so.
1. Aggravation unlimited by putting up with it and waiting for 3 minutes whenever it won't start. (not recommended!!! drives you crazy!)
2. Replace the ignition switch and reader and keys (expensive, but the best all around solution if money is not a problem as it keeps your security system intact, around $250-300)
3. You can buy and install (or have installed) a VATS key reader bypass module. (also a bit expensive, like $150-200 installed)
4.My choice- I took my key to Radio Shack and read the resistance or the resistor. There are 12-15 different combinations. Then I bought 2 resistors that added up to that value + 5%. I soldered those together in line with bull nose connector ends. Then I pulled the lower steering column cover and found the 2 wires leading from the ignition switch reader. Be sure to disconnect your battery and leave the big yellow wire alone, that's the airbag!!! The 2 wires are usually run together inside a long outer sleeve similar to shrink rap and they exit the switch from a different position than the normal on/off/accessory etc. wires. Once located I clipped the wires leaving the switch leads dead and installed the matching bull nose connector ends and then plugged my resistors in line. The car now believes it has the proper resistance key inserted. The rest of the VATS system is not affected. Car starts every time!
This solution requires a little bit of time (took me 1 1/2 hours all in all) and just a little know how, but total cost came to $2.79 :)

I HAVE A GRANDE AM 200O MY QUESTION IS I PUT THE KEY IN THE KEY SWITCH AND I CAN MOVE UP AND DOWN THE KEY TO THE SWITCH CAN ON. I CAN CHANGE THE KEY SWITCH? OR I NEED REPROGRAM THE SECURITY SYSTEM?

U need to change the ignition key lock cylinder and have the secrity system module reprogramed to reconize the new lock cylinder, so this job is best left to the dealer.
