I have a 1991 Chevy Lumina 3.1 with just at 100k miles. It was running like a beast until one day it started to choke a little; then about a month later I was driving and it just died in the middle of 91 Lumina was running great then one day started to choke then taking a turn it stalled out and wouldn't start. When she did after 5 minutes it was peddle to the floor to keep her running until I got her home. Now she won't stay running. Put new fuel filter, map sensor and EGR gasket on. Wreaks of fuel when she stalls out. Also put in fuel injector cleaner. Now today after putting on map sensor yesterday she started without a glitch and purred for about 3 minutes then stalled out and wouldn't start without punching gas peddle. Please help....could it be the catalyst converter or fuel pump or something else? I see all types of questions and possibilities but nobody puts what fixed this problem as I see MANY 91 Lumina owners have had this same exact issue. Please help....anyone?
On electronic fuel injection pumping an pumping an pumping the gas pedal does nothing without the engine running ! Pushing the gas pedal to the floor will cause the PCM - engine computer to go into clear flood mode .
You have some very interesting ideas here , but not really how it works or is !
The vehicle will go into closed loop fuel control when the engine coolant temp reaches a definded temp an the O2 sensor get hot.
She would run for a couple minutes and die which is open loop when running, closed loop is when the sensors kick and it would die. Pulled spark plugs, they were black meaning no spark. Can only be 2
Black spark plugs indecate a rich condition , over fueled , wet spark plugs indecate no spark .

check for trouble codes first. it may have a trouble code to lead you in the right direction. Also check fuel pressure.

No, the mechanics are right.The fuel pump very rarely gets completely faulty.--------- If the fuel pump looses power from its relay, then it quits completely.But if it has power then it will not quit completely.---------- In your case the rough idle and stalling in drive problem, relates to fuel pump.The fuel runs from the fuel pump and passes through fuel filter and enters the engine.---------- But in your case the flow of fuel is low/ less.Due to this engine is not getting required fuel so it stalls and because the fuel is getting less its rough to ruin,instead of smooth run.---------- ----------- To confirm this problem, get the fuel pressure tested.If the fuel pressure tested low, that means the fuel pump and fuel filter both are issue.-----------The pump gets minute crack and it looses its pressure and filter gets clogged, so it does not let fuel to flow fluently.---------- Also get all the three parts, that is EGR valve, the IAC and MAP.Remove this parts, clean it and reinsert it properly.--------- ---------- This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

We bought our daughter a 1991 Lumina 3.1 with 113,000 miles. It was running fine then one day it just stalled out and didn't want to start without pumping and pumping and pumping the gas peddle. I had to hold down gas and break at stop lights just to get her home about a mile. Once home she wouldn't run. She would run for a couple minutes and die which is open loop when running, closed loop is when the sensors kick and it would die. Pulled spark plugs, they were black meaning no spark. Can only be 2 things....99% of the time it's the crank sensor or the coil pack. We tried coil pack first, no go. Then the crank sensor for $13.99 at O'Reilly's Auto Parts and it took 3 times starting and turning off for the computer to read the change and now she's back up and running. Before the coil pack and crank sensor we put on a MAP sensor, MASS sensor, Fuel filter, Spark Plugs, Air filter and no luck. Hope this actually helps someone becaue we did tons of research and found suggestions but noone has put what has actually fixed their Lumina. ;)
