An O2 sensor that is not functioning correctly or is reading a lean or rich fuel mixture turn on the check engine light in the dash, this is an Orange indicator. I know if a fuel pressure regulator diaphram goes, it will emit fuel fumes in engine compartment. may not be but this is worth a try. a leaking regulator can cause hard starting, poor fuel economy, stalling, check engine light, gas smell under hood. take a fuel pressure reading. In most of the cases, the fuel pressure should read 45 p.s.i. to 55 p.s.i. for the injection mechanism and 14 to 18 p.s.i. in a throttle body injection assembly. Even a slight variation from the specified extremes may be acceptable, but a large deviation is a sign of problem and bound to result in engine failures. check fuel filter first.
