Check coolant temp sensor located at driver side end of cyl head. remove sensor and check or cracks. also check connector for corrosion. if cracked, go to dealer for replacment. they eill sell you a new designed metal sensor to replace your cracked plastic one. dont buy aftermarket, they will not be accurate. cracked sensor will cause eng. to run rich. may start ok cold but not when hot.

1995 SC1 280K oil burner. Kept full. Previously 41 mpg, now 27 mpg over 1 year span. Oil smells like gas and so does the exhaust. Extreme loss of power. Will not idle. Runs rough at lower rpm, but...

If you are keeping the car forever, swap the engine with a rebuilt one. there are many for sale out there.
about $2k for a rebuilt with core credit. if you are really just keeping it for a year or two until the front "frame" collapses, buy a used engine out of a junkyard, look until you find one with less than 100k on it. there are many for sale on eBay but the shipping will kill you and you most likely have junkyards closer to home.

note if you have an SC1 means SOHC so you have to have a SOHC donor vehicle. SC1,SL1, or SW1
the engines were the same 96, 97,98 i believe. but do not get an older engine.

What are the symptoms if my car has a bad engine coolant temp sensor it is a 98 saturn sl1

More specifically you will have trouble starting the car. When the ECTS is bad the PCM reads it that the engine is at -40F. This means that it will dump tons of fuel into the engine in order to warm it up. You may also experience rough idling due to the rich fuel mixture and black smoke from the exhaust (which is an indication of running rich, burnt fuel).

Black smoke & ckanking noise when shifting

The popping noise could be a misfire and as for the black smoke, the engine is running rich. If there is an Auto ZOne in your area, have them scan the car for any DTC codes and look have the fuel pressure regulator checked. Look for cracked or if the vacuum tube has fallen off the fuel pressure regulator. Good luck and hope this helps

Hard starting and to much smoke when engine running idle and sometimes fluctuation

Smoke usually there's a problem.... Bluish gray smoke means you're burning oil (could be a number of things like piston rings, valve seals)... White smoke means could mean you're burning transmission fluid, or there's a crack in the gasket or engine block.... Black smoke could mean you need your air filter changed, bad fuel injectors, bad distributor cap, ignition coil... I would guess it's probably black smoke coming out of your exhaust from the sounds of your symptoms...

Try pulling the engine coolant temp sensor, They often crack not sure why but the ceramic tip cracks makes the car hard to start, the car's idle may race while shifting gears, and often smokes. The sensor is on the right side of the engine when looking at it on the head. Easy to change and get too
