Emissons too high

First thing I would do is this... Get a can of SEA FOAM and add it to your Fuel. Then drive 100 Miles and have it retested. 90% sure it will pass after cleaning the system.

looks that your catalytic converter is broken.Before you do anything take it to a qualified mechanic and request for emission test to see whether you do have high emission due to lambda sensor failure or cat. also you can check from your exhaust end if your emissions smell like rotten eggs.If so change cat.

My corsa has had a LAMBA SENSOR fault so ive changed them, front & back, but with no joy, has anyone got any ideas could it be a ECU fault

Hi Michelle, Check all the vacuum hoses for leakage and tightness of fit. Also check to make sure there are no leakages on the intake manifold. The problem could be the cold start, AC or steering up idle. I suggest a diagnostic scan which will pin point the problem. Regards John

didnt know that the earlier golfs had two lambda sensors,but that said,if there are supposed to be two,then there will be one before the catalytic convertor (pre-cat)and then one after,if the car has had the exhaust changed by a previous owner,then this maybe the issue,you need to get it checked out because this is an MOT faliure item,i.e emissions too high/hydrocarbons too high.seems the cheapest way to solve this is by fitting the correct exhaust unfortunately.hope this helps

Hi, Few things to check here, first i would check the Lambda sensor as this monitors the air fuel mixture and stops the car running too lean or too rich. The most likely option is that the catalytic converter may be at fault the element inside may have broken up over time and therefore is unable to breakdown the exhaust emission into a cleaner release of exhaust fumes resulting in emissions failure. At the very worst you may have worn piston oil rings that would also produce excessive smoke emissions from the exhaust.

if you stll on the original cat might explain, if not try changing middle lambda sensor, and change front one at same time.

check both lambda sensors for breaks in wires and for open circuit on heater side of lambda sensor on the one under the car on the second cat,failed heater element will not heat gas engough for sensor to read causing false readings , also check for slow i.a.c valve on inlet manifold.

Hi this could be down to the catalytic converter,,, these arnt cheap so first give the car an oil change new filters plugs etc.... also the lambda sensor can cause this and the MAF sensor,
Failing all the above then im afraid it will be down to the all expensive catlytic converter

It is running rich. Verify the readings are within specs from the O2 sensors, they should fluctuate up and down once the car is hot, constant high reading is rich run, very low is lean or defective sensors, also clean the throttle body and air-bypass valve, changing the oil can help as well. Do you have any OBD 1 Codes in the system memory?
