Cluth Pedal may not be depressing the cluth safety switch. The switch is directly under cluth pedal when fully depressed. The pedal has a plastic circle piece covering a hole in the pedal for some reason. If this piece breaks off, the switch will not be depressed or only depress some times and not others thus car may start some times and not others. The switch may also be bad. Engine will not turn if this switch is not depressed thus acting as if the starter is bad or some sort of other problem. Make sure the car is in neutral depress the switch with your finger and turn the key or have a friend turn the key. Car should fire right away. Again MAKE SURE THE CAR IS NOT IN GEAR the switch does not engage the clutch.

Rock your car back and forth. The starter is stuck between teeth. I had a jeep that had the same problem. It had teeth missing on the starter motor. This seemed to do the trick

2007 Chevy Impala, clicking noise starts BEFORE key in ignition. Why?

If your 2007 Chevy Impala is making a clicking noise before the key is even inserted into the ignition, it could be caused by a few different issues. Some potential causes include:
  1. Faulty starter motor: The starter motor is responsible for starting the engine when the ignition is turned on. If the starter motor is faulty or has worn out, it may make a clicking noise as it tries to engage with the flywheel.
  2. Loose or damaged starter motor relay: The starter motor relay is an electrical component that sends power to the starter motor when the ignition is turned on. If the relay is loose or damaged, it may cause a clicking noise.
  3. Low battery: If the battery is low on charge or has gone bad, it may not have enough power to start the engine, causing a clicking noise.
  4. Other electrical issues: There may be other electrical issues, such as a loose connection or a problem with the ignition switch, that are causing the clicking noise.
To determine the cause of the clicking noise, it is recommended to bring your vehicle to a mechanic or a dealership for further diagnosis and repair. They will be able to test the starter motor, battery, and other electrical components to determine the source of the problem and recommend the appropriate repairs.

1994 nissan maxima - engine will not turn over, seems to be electrical as I did get it to start once , but when I turned it off it would not start again. checked all fuses and they are good. Could it be...

It is possible but unlikely, the ignition switch is pretty rugged and dosn't give much trouble.
Check the starter motor connections , try hot wireing direct from the positive terminal of your battery to the starter to ensure that the starter is not the problem.
If the starter is Ok investigate the shifter lockout that stops the car starting in gear, they sometimes get dirty or break.

Hey there, I have a P reg Audi A4 avant sport. The initial problem was that the ignition key did not spring back from cranking the starter motor, I believe this has caused my bigger problem which is that I...

It sounds like you have 2 problems.

The first is the ignition switch. Call or visit your Audi dealer and ask about a recall for your ignition switch. I believe it should be replaced under recall.

Next, it sounds like the starter solenoid is not engaging. The starter has probably been damaged due to the faulty switch.

The third, and I hope it is not the case, is that the teeth on the flywheel which engage the starter are damaged and missing.

Once the starter is removed it will be obvious if there is damage to the flywheel.

Good luck.

2002 nissan altima wont crank?

Check the transmission neutral start inhibit switch is not the cause of your problem. (try both 'P' to 'N' positions).
If the headlights work ok there should be enough power in the battery to at least make a solenoid type noise when start is attempted- so it may not be caused by a faulty alternator.
Check the battery terminals are clean and firmly attached to the battery,
Check battery is properly grounded to the chassis and motor,
Check that +12v is available at the starter motor engage solenoid when the ignition switch is held in the 'start' position - check any start slave relay operation.
If all above is OK, you may have a faulty starter motor.

2000 reg clio 1.2 and SOMETIMES it will not start.

Hi, if when you turn the key to start the car the engine dont turn over as if its trying to start then this indicates that you have a problem with your starter motor it is the selanoid on the starter starting to fail

Sometimes it will turn the engine over starting the car and other times it will do nothing and you might here a slight clocking noise coming from the starter motor.

If your battery is ok and holds the charge ie the lights are bright without the car running then this indicates that your battery is ok and that the starter needs replacing. Sometimes you can get away with giving the starter motor a few taps with a hammer this sometimes clears any muck inside the starter selonoid getting it working for a bit longer but eventually it wont work at all so its best ot get this done sooner rather that later.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

Starter Switch Does Not Start Engine

HI,
It sounds to me like the starter / solenoid area needs attention - I think the clicking will be the solenoid activating but the starter is not turning. Do the lights dim to zero when you turn the ignition switch? If so, it may be the starter itself at fault; if not, then the electrical connections to the starter should be checked for corrosion. If the terminal are hot after trying to start, that's a sign of corroded terminals.
Let me know how you get on.

Cheers, D
