I have the same car, with the same problem. I have been told that its either the ignition cylinder or the ignition switch. I have had my battery, starter, and alternator tested all are fine.

  • Anonymous Dec 08, 2008

Replaced starter, still does the same thing. The old starter turned out to be fine. Cleaned battery cable connections. Not that either... Ignition?

I just came across this post in a google search. I have a 2002 IS 300 with 100000 and it took two times for it to turn over this morning. I hope this doesn't pose a constant problem!

  • Anonymous Dec 18, 2008

6 mos. ago wouldn't start, ran a hot wire from battery to ignition switch, Started fine. For the last 2 mos. I have to pump it 10 times & hold throttle wide open to start it. Now It wont start at all, it gets really close though.

the starter engages and turns the motor it just doesnt want to start.its not every time or even real often but when it happens it just happens.

  • Anonymous Dec 24, 2008

1998 CABRIO 2.0 picks when it wants to start.

its NOT the starter or battery.

few people online with the same problem seem to have the issue when they are also around water. It is raining outside today and my car wont start. Those people usually wait (that would give it time to dry right?) and it will start and they issue is fixed with a new coil. Sounds like a possiable solution to me.. i will def try this bc i have had problems when i have gone through really big puddles and when its wet outside...

  • Anonymous Dec 30, 2008

can anyone tell me if it would be in my ignition.... my pathfinder would not start on x-mas eve (right when i was packing up the truck to go to kamloops), So we changed the solenoid..... now it starts only when it feels like it... what should i do?

My 1989 Mazda B2600i will start and stay running only if I hold the key in the start position. I noticed I have to play with the key in the neutral pwr. position to get the dash lights to come on. What's the matter?. Thanks, Ole.

  • jay_1042 Jan 11, 2009

Starter sometimes engages. Other times I just get a 'click' or nothing at all. I wait for a short period of time, turn the key and the engine starts. I'm assuming it's the starter contactor (if there is such a thing) but I have no idea where to look for it. I can't afford to pay for diagnostics at the dealer and want to fix it myself if that is an option.

My ford van is doing the same thing, engine turns over but sometimes doesn't start, wait a few minutes or move from part to drive and pack it starts?

  • attymcree Jan 21, 2009

2003 Saab 9-3 convertible.  Frequently fails to start, but then starts after a wait of 5 minutes to 2 hours.  These events have nothing in common, (weather, time of day, driving conditions, etc.)
Dealer replaced starter and no change.  Battery okay and start assembly is apparently ok, since it's new and the car does start most of the time.

  • Anonymous Feb 03, 2009

I have the same problem with the same model year. Replaced battery, starter and control module. Dealer doesn't have a clue.

  • sidgirl74 Feb 05, 2009

I have the same issue. Sometimes it starts and sometimes it does not. I never know when but typically (when it doesn't start) if I let it sit there anywhere from 20 minutes - 2+ hours... it starts up no problem. I have replaced the knock sensor twice and it works for a couple of moths. I take it back to the mechanic and it is burned out. He replaces it and same thing happens a couple of months later. Today it is in the shop again for a 3rd time with same problem. Also, the start engine light is on and I went to Autozone for free diagnostics test and the sensor is what it came up with. Ideas? Help! I love my car even if it does have 193K on it, runs excellent.

I was having the same loud clicking when i turned the key. engine wasnt turning over at all. The problem was the Starter Solenoid Switch. $20 bucks at AutoZone. Took 15 minutes to change (its only 2 nuts and 5 wires). Clicking is gone and Jeep Starts. this was for a 1984 CJ7

Good luck

Our 1994 Sable had a intermittent starter problem and even a new starter didn't fix it.  Turns out it could have been fixed for free had I known the spade connector to the solenoid was so corroded that it would not always make contact.  Replaced the connector and it has now been working fine for about 5 years. The starter connector is in a vulnerable place where it will frequently get wet, so coat it with silicone sealant after replacement.

It is because of the actual remote start brains. If you try to start it over 2 times in 10 min. it wont start. So you are right on letting it sit for ten min. that is just the reason that it does that. nothing wrong with batt, alt, etc.

If you have a 1997 pontiac firebird and it wont start because the security light keeps coming on what is the problem?

could be a security relean.
•Insure that the battery is fully charged.
•Turn the ignition switch from the OFF position to the CRANK position attempting to start the vehicle. The vehicle will start and then stall.
•Leave the ignition switch in the ON position while observing the security indicator.
•When the security indicator turns off, which can take up to 10 minutes, turn the ignition switch off. Wait 10 seconds.
The BCM and the PCM will learn the new code on the next start attempt.

My chevy 2500 has the security light on, and it will not start, its a standard if that will help. how do i get it to start back up?

PUT KEY IN THE IGNITION SWITCH.TURN TO THE ON POSITION WITH ENGINE OFF FOR 10 MINUTES.WATCH SECURITY LIGHT.WHEN SECURITY LIGHT DISAPPEAR.TURN OFF IGNITION FOR 5 SECONDS THEN START THE ENGINE.HAVE VECHICLE SCANNEN BECAUSE POSSIBLE CAUSE TO YOUR PROBLEM IS THE KEY OR KEYS WORN. YOU HAVE FAULTY IGNITION SWITCH OR BCM. THE DEALERSHIP HAS TO CHECK IT OUT.THE 10 MINUTE TRICK WILL WORK FOR SHORT TIME.IT WILL GET WHERE 10 MINUTE TRICK WONT WORK.WHEN SECURITY LIGHT ON NOT SAFE TO DRIVE VECHICLE.BECAUSE THE SECURITY THEFT MODE WILL SHUT DOWN YOUR CAR. DISABLE FUEL PUMP.

Chevy cavalier wont start randomly! makes one click and a humm sound my lights come on the radio comes on but the car just wont start, ive had battery replaced along with the ignition switch, fuel pump,...

Ok then, from your description and the
make/model/year of the car you have there,
it appears you've reset the VATS.

The car's security immobilizer
reader at the key switch
does not recognize the coded
chip in the ignition key any longer.

You can try to put the key
in the ignition, turn to the on position &
wait at least 10 min like that.
(Do not turn off the key switch before
10 minutes as elapsed!)

Once done, the key is re-programmed and
should allow the fuel injectors to work again.
The car would start now if corrected.

In some cases, the VATS (GM'S VEHICLE ANTI THEFT SYSTEM)
will re learn the code this way, and will then
allow the restart, however if this does not work,
then you can simply tow it to any GM vehicle dealer
to have the service department re code it.

There is a permanent solution though.
Adding the PLJX Self learning Bypass module (59.95)
will bypass the PASSLOCK system in your vehicle
for good. See this at www.PASSLOCK2.com

Good luck I hope method 1 does the trick!

Here is the 30 min relearn:

Ignition keys relearn takes about 30 min to do. 30-Minute Learn Procedure 1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. 2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON; the vehicle will not start. 3. Observe the SECURITY tell tale light. After approximately 10 minutes, the light will turn OFF. 4. Turn OFF the ignition switch, and wait 5 seconds. 5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 - two more times - for a total of 3 cycles of 10 minutes. 3x10 = 30 minutes. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch turn from OFF to CRANK Important: Turn the Ignition Switch OFF. The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle. 6. Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password. 7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles. Without a scan tool you may have momentary starter interruptions while history clears itself.

Saturn ion,sometimes wont start

The problem is in the ignition - the grease gets thick in the cold and doent turn quite right the first time. everything turns on, but the anti theft system thinks you have the wrong key so shuts off pwer to the starter. it takes 8-10 mintues to reset. That is why it normally starts when you come back later. I have had the same problem and done tons of reseach. Right now my temp solution has been a small heater and an extention cord. I keep it plugged in over night on a medium setting - just enough to keep the inside temp above freezing. I am also researching remote starts because saturn dealership charges $250 to replace the ignition, and a remote start will run about $300. Saturn wont do a recall because they feel it is not a safety hazard. I say that is bull. Good luck!
