Checking the fault codes

Does anyone know how to read the fault codes without a code reader on a 1995 vw jetta????

  • henak Jan 28, 2009

....will this technique work on my 95 VW Cabrio...and are the code definitions the same?

  • wrcollett May 11, 2010

I have the problem with the Check Engine Light on all the time. Tried the above procedure and when I remove the jumper the light just goes out and no flashing or feeback at all. Start the engine and the light stays off for a short period and then comes back on. What else can I try to get the codes out? Is there a problem with the Check engine light ciricuit? Even if no codes in system, I shou8ld get a 4-digit code that shows no faults right?

Yes.  Next to the ash tray there is a black slide off plate that reveals the OBD I plug.  {1996 and newer can be read with an OBD II reader (read for free at Advance auto or Auto Zone)}  Once you reveal this plug on the 1995, you can plug in a single jumper wire (or even a paper clip) in the #4 and #15 pin hole.  There are two rows of pin holes, count from the upper right to the #4, then on to #15 (which will be the second to last pin hole).  Turn the ignition switch on (motor not running), insert the jumper wire for about 3 to 5 seconds, then remove the wire.  The ENGINE LIGHT will flash a hold, then the code, which will go something like this, flash, flash, PAUSE, flash, flash, PAUSE, flash, PAUSE, flash, flash, flash, flash.  Then it will repeat the codes if you just sit there and observe it.  The code in my example would be a 2214 code.
Below are some code I found on a website.  I hope this helps.  Now I ask that you take the time to answer someone elses question.  Lets all share.  Good luck, "Peace through power and knowledge"

Actually it doesn't work on the 95 VW quite using blink codes in the 95 model year. You have to use a code reader. OBDII may work and O'Riely Autoparts rents them for free.

Some 95's are OBDI and some 95's are OBDII. You need to check to see what you have.

My 2006 vw jetta tdi lost power and died wont restart am told need code to restart but dont have right code

You will have to have the fault codes read by a code reading machine . That will tell you why the engine stopped. I am suggesting that you check to see if the cam shaft is turning when you try to start it as the timing belt may be broken. Repair/replace items listed by the codes -reset the CPU with the code reader

The code on my car vw new jetta 2005 its a 2.5 the codes is reading on my car p0322 and code p3081 the reading was took when my epc light came on and my engine light on and i have a oil link i smell r

code p3081 refers to engine temperature too low===causes--allow engine to warm up---cooling system fault
I would check for a thermostat stuck open

code p0322 refers to crank shaft position (CKP) sensor/engine speed (RPM) sensor--no signal===causes--wiring---CKP/RPM sensor---ECM

2002 vw jetta, gas smell & shaking after 60mph

Well if the check engine light is on then there is something wrong, now you need the engine control module scanned for fault codes to begin to understand the problem that turned the light on, you need an OBD2 code reader (about $35.00) as a minimum to read the codes.

1995 VW Jetta fault codes will not read

Hi Gregory, take the vehicle for a diagnostic scan. I am not very sure what question you're asking. I believe that you may be reporting that code 4 and 15 are reporting faults. If there are no fault codes the scanner will report 'No fault code" If it shows the two you report, a fault has occurred in those two areas. Regards John
