How to check transmission fluid on 2008 dodge nitro

Where do you add the transmission fluid

  • Anonymous Aug 26, 2012

Edit for my previous answer: On the nitro there is no longer screw (on the liberty w/o tow package and with dual speed 4x4, there is). Also, with regards to the dipstick... The best measurement is from the bottom of the pan, but with a makeshift dipstick, you can't always find the bottom of the pan, so a distance measurement from the top of the fill tube to the top of your fluid level will be accurate, all else held equal. If going from the bottom of the pan, the fluid level when hot (approx 180 C) should be 46mm from the bottom of the pan.

These other posts have nothing to do with anything. One tells you how to change the fluid in an old manual transmission, the other tells you how to change your oil. And what neutral has to do with anything... I just don't know. To check the fluid in your Dodge Nitro (regardless of year) is going to be a tad difficult if the answer doesn't slap you in the face as soon as you open the hood. This vehicle has a "sealed transmission" with the fill tube plugged with a little cap that states "Dealer Use Only" or something to that effect. What does this mean? Nothing. They don't give you a dipstick, just that stupid plug, and call it "sealed" to scare everyone away from trying to service their own vehicle in any capacity. All you need to do is purchase a generic dipstick at the auto store, or do what I did and make your own (I made mine from a CLEAN strip of leftover pvc siding, but any CLEAN, FIRM, and NARROW piece of material will do. Something that doesn't break easily is a big plus, since trying to fish things out of the tube is not fun. All you need to do is insert your dipstick or home-made dipstick until it hits bottom or cant go in anymore. All you need to know is how far down the fluid level is from the top of the tube. By marking the top of the fill tube, and the fluid level (with trans cold) you have made a dipstick. Or, if you bought one at the auto store, just make your own mark for the fluid level.
The transmission fluid drain procedure is the same as most other automatic trans. vehicles: pull the 20 or so bolts out of the trans pan (one will be longer than the others and probably have a thread locker, so pay attention to what hole this one comes out of... you'll be thankful when you put the pan back on). Drop the pan, remove the filter and the drain plug (under the pan) to drain the rest of the fluid. Put the plug back in and tighten it, then put the new filter in. After CAREFULLY scraping off the old gasket (do NOT scratch the surface up, sand it, or do anything like that) put the new gasket on with the pan. Get all the screws started before you tighten any of them up, and make sure you put the long screw back where it belongs, with a LITTLE high-temperature thread locker on it. Tighten everything up then get out from under your Nitro. Oh, and SAVE THE FLUID!! Put it into your new trans. fluid bottles as you put the new fluid in the truck. The amount you have taken out should be very close to the amount you are putting in. If not, you will want to double check the level with the home-made dipstick to verify you have enough fluid once you refill.
Now go on over to the "anti-dipstick" (fill tube) it will be the only long fill tube sticking up near your firewall. If there is any doubt, its the only one without a dipstick and it is located just to the left of the motor a few inches forward of the firewall. At this point, you should add all but 1 or or 2 quarts of the 8.8 quart capacity of the 3.7 L Nitro... if you have the 4.0L or the tow package like I do, you will need more. Do yourself a favor and use a nice short funnel and make sure its clean. Now... Check the level. If you're short, keep adding until you're at the proper level. Then, start the vehicle and shift through each gear (staying in each gear for about 3-4 seconds) then work back to Park the same way and shut the vehicle off before anything heats up. Check the fluid level again... you may have to add more. If you need to add more do so.
Finally, put the stupid plug back in the fill hole and keep your dipstick in your trunk so you can check the level once you get to work (or the mall, or the grocery store). Just make sure you check it again after your first foray into the outside world, and have some fluid on standby in the event the vehicle needs more.
Have fun and good luck. If you manage to mess this up, its not my fault, and if you can't figure out how to do any of these things, or don't know what I was talking about with some of these things, then you probably should just have your vehicle serviced by a professional anyway. ;)

SOURCE: where is the Transmission fluid dip stick to add

Hello and Welcome to Fixya,
Very sorry Sir, as far as I know. The Dip stick is not included in this model. The transmission fluid must be checked only by the professionals at the dealership's place using special tools for the job (so that the unit shouldn't be over runned by the user and for long life safety of the engine). You should contact the dealer near your place for the completion of the job!

SOURCE: where do I add transmission fluid on a manual 1999

On cars with a manual transmission, there is one and sometimes two removable bolts near the bottom of the transmission (underneath the car) If it has two bolts then the bottom bolt will need to be removed to drop the old fluid out...after all of the fluid (most of the time it is 80W-90 gear oil but sometimes it could be regular motor oil (dependes on the make and model of the car) is removed then seal up the bottom bolt and openthe top bolt and fill it back up (check your owners manual to see how much oil it will need to refill it)...If there is only one removable bolt then open it, drain it all out, and using a hand pump (sold at most auto stores) pump the gear oil or motor oil (check your owners manual for the specs) back into the hole and when the fluid starts to run out of that hole, quickly reseal it to lock the fluid inside the transmission...make sure you wear gloves and safety glasses to keep the oils off your skin

Where is the neutral safety switch located?

The neutral safety switch in a 2008 Dodge Nitro is typically located on the transmission case, near the gear selector linkage. If your vehicle is experiencing starting issues in park and now the park won't engage, it's possible that the neutral safety switch might be malfunctioning. I recommend having a professional mechanic diagnose and repair the issue to ensure it's properly addressed.

HOW MANY QUARTS OF TRANSMISSION FLUID DO I USE FOR A DODGE NITRO 2007. 3.7 LITER ENGINE.

Hello Sarah,

You shouldn’t need to add transmission fluid as most Dodge products of this year had no maintenance transmission with no dipstick.

Did you have to remove the pan, or are you losing transmission fluid?

Need to know where to add transmission fluid in a dodge caravan 2008

You would add transmission fluid type ATF-4 to the transmission at the place where the transmission dipstick is located on the driver's side of the engine compartment. If there is no dipstick but instead a plug that says dealer use only you need to take it to the dealer for them to check it. If it is low or the pan is leaking they may try to get you to spend $200 on a flush and fill but you could still do it your self for half of that. If you have the 4speed transmission (on the 3.3l engine) the filter is about $10 and it will take about 5.5 quarts of fluid when drained. If you have the 6speed transmission on the 3.8l or 4.0l engines you will need to go to the dealership for the filter $30 and make your own gasket with RTV silicone. It will also take about 5.5 quarts of fluid when drained. Make sure you have several hours for the fluid to drain and then a day for the RTV silicone to dry before refilling. Then have the dealer check the level again. Good Luck.

What are the major service items that should be checked between 30k and 35k miles? I understand all fluids, oil and filter. Do the spark plugs and diferential; need to be done at the same time?

Most newer cars have spark plugs that you should get 100,000 miles from. Just a general check of fluids, not a bad time to have the transmission serviced and replace the fuel filter.

Where is the transmission or where do you put transmission fluid on the 2008 dodge avenger?

If your 2008 Avenger is set up like the Breeze, Cirrus, Stratus, or Sebring that it evolved from (and I don't see why they would change a successful platform), when you are facing the car the engine is on the left and the transmission is on the right (driver's side). The transmission dipstick should be the one between the engine and the transmission near the center of the engine compartment. When you pull the transmission dipstick, it should say something about the type of fluid required, and under what conditions to check the fluid level (usually on a level surface at normal operating temperature while in park). Add fluid if needed, and be VERY careful not to overfill as newer transmissions are very sensitive to fluid levels. Going as little as a couple of ounces over can adversely affect transmission performance and longevity. By the way, I strongly recommend changing your filter and fluid every 24,000 miles to keep from having to replace the transmission at arround 130,000 miles. The Mitsubishi transmission in my Eagle Vision (same as a Dodge Intrepid) disintegrated at around 137,000 miles and cost me $1380 to replace. Regular maintenance by the prior owner would have saved me that expense.
