Liftgate/ running boards problem

My 2003 navi. running boards and power liftgate stopped working. is not under warranty anymore and local dealer says that it needs a new power liftgate module, which will fix these problems. i replaced the fuses, so that is not the problem. is there a such thing as a power liftgate module? this will be an expensive repair, so i need to know if the info is accurate from the dealer!!
thanks for any feedback offered!!

The exact same thing happened to me this week. My dash reads liftgate ajar and the running boards won't deploy. The dealer proposed the same solution...liftgate module as the needed fix.

I have a 03 doing the same thing

  • Anonymous Dec 16, 2008

  • Anonymous Dec 21, 2008

I have same problem. But mine will work for a couple days if i reset everything by taking off the battery cables. My will also all of a sudden work when its cold outside and i will get out of it and to running boards will suddenly deploy. WTF?

I have the same problem. liftgate ajar light comes on and liftgate do not work plus the running boards will not deploy. i found that by removing the 5th fuse located on the left (7.5) then putting it back in, the running boards and liftgate works. Also this problem only occurs when it's cold outside. 25 & below. i bought the vehicle in april. no problems when its warm.

I had the same problem and the dealer replaced my power module. if you can invest in an extended warranty. Mine covered the module. It paid for itself just with that fix alone.

Yes, all accessory functions are controlled by one or more control modules, this problem most likely is the GEM, Generic Electronic Module

I have a 2005 Navigator. Sometimes the liftgate works correctly. Other times it will close via remote, then immediately reopen. Sometimes, I must stop it manually, then push it closed by hand so I can...

Electronic's , aren't they great ? There is a control module (power lift gate module ) Switch (sensor) inputs to the module . Lift gate obstacle detection strip right and left , liftgate cinching motor ,liftgate unlatch motor .Liftgate drive motor assemblys left and right . Probably a bad switch feeding bad voltage signal to the control module ! Like one of the obstacle detection sensors maybe. Could possibly have DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes stored in the control module. Your best bet maybe to have the dealer run diagnostic's on it , check for codes . Need a factory or professional type diagnostic tool to do this. I would say you mite be able to check the sensor inputs to the module , don't know what or how much voltage > Some of these circuit's are a five volt signal from the module . Ohm check the obstacle detection sensor ? I still think best thing would have it checked for DTC'S . Almost forgot about the thing opening when you close another door , All the modules on the vehicle are connected on what is call a serial data network . Doors have modules inside as well .could be commanding that door open some how.
If you would like to see what your up against , here is a web site for free wiring diagrams http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html Enter vehicle info. year , make , model and engine size. Under system click on body & accessories , then under subsystem click on power liftgate. Click the search button ,then the blue link. The second diagram down starts liftgate diagrams . Good luck !

I just bought a new 2011 expedition el with a power rear liftgate and after I opened the rear liftgate glass for the first time I started getting the "liftgate/glass ajar" message, and related to...

This sounds like a BCM problem. This could have been affected by the radio hook up. But usually dealer hook ups are play and play after the radio is programmed to the vehicle. This is not something you should try to fix. You mess with the wrong thing and you could void your warranty and have to pay to have it fixed. I suggest you return it to the original dealer and have them repair it.

Liftgate won't unlock/open on Saturn Outlook 07

there is a small plastic cover on the inside of the liftgate near the center. Pry it off with a small screwdriver and you'll have to probe around a bit with a larger flat screwdriver, but there's a small lever in there that will trip the latch. Is it a power liftgate by chance???

Liftgate hydraulics not working

check the ff.
1. check the liftgate button if its properly working by listening to a clacking sound if not then the solinoid is not functioning or check the liftgate hydraulic retainer (shock absorber like) if its pushing or not if not then the retainer lost its hydraulic pressure, bring your car to the dealer and check if its still under warranty... and get it replaced.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Principles of Operation
The power liftgate is controlled by the power liftgate module.
The power liftgate module receives inputs from:
  • glass position switch (determines the ajar status of the liftgate glass).
  • forkbolt switch (determines the primary position of the latch).
  • detent switch (determines the secondary position of the latch).
  • home switch (determines the power cinch status).
  • power liftgate control switch (activates the power liftgate from the interior of vehicle).
  • pinch strip switches (determines if an obstacle is detected between the pinch strip and liftgate).
  • instrument cluster module (activates and sets the options for the power liftgate).
  • optical sensor (determines the direction, travel speed and obstacle detection of the liftgate).
  • UBP serial communication link.
The power liftgate module sends outputs to:
  • liftgate motors.
  • power cinching latch system.
  • liftgate chime module.
  • body security module
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The liftgate consists of the following components:
  • liftgate window glass latch
  • door lock actuator (power liftgate only)
  • liftgate latch
  • liftgate handle
  • liftgate latch remote control (power liftgate only)
  • liftgate ajar switch
  • chime module (power liftgate only)

Liftgate window broken and liftgate dented

i would go to a dealer and go in to the part department and they can give you a printout telling how it comes apart and if there is a good body shop or trim shop near you they can help you cause they have book and diagram and the salvage yard you got the liftgate from also have books too.
