2001 Nissan Quest - Broken Exterior Sliding Door Handle

Originally, the lower part of the driver side exterior door handle broke loose and the door could not be opened using the exterior door handle. Door could open via the interior handle. A couple days later, the interior door handle no longer opens the door (so the door will not open at all now). Is this a "dealership" fix or can a weekend warrior fix this?

Hey snorkelbobby, if you have any instructions that would be awesome! My wife is getting tired of the passenger-only entering and exiting and I'm too tight to let the dealership get my $500 for this. I just replaced an interior door handle on my Suburban and it was not too difficult, but that was a GM (and there are lots of cheap parts & instructions on the internet for GMs - not so much for Nissan Quests...). Thanks for your assistance! ~FRagsASU

Trying to find information on replacing the handle on our 2001 Nissan Quest myself. I'm a female with little car experience and was hoping it was something I could do on my own.

  • Jennifer Hilderbrand Mar 08, 2009

I have also broke off my 2001 Nissan Quest sliding door handle on the driver side. With the below 0 weather here and the freezing of the doors, I knew it was inevitable. However, I'm not willing to pay hundreds of dollars for someone else to do this. I am a female who doesn't do much work on cars, is this something I can handle on my own and if so, does anyone have any information as to how I would do that?

Did anyone find the answer for this? I have the same problem on a 2000 Mercury Villager (Nissan Quest); child proof lock was set and the outside door handle is broken off.

I have also broke off my 2001 Nissan Quest sliding door handle on the driver side. Also the sliding door cannot be opened from interior... Any help is appreciated... Thanks

the child lock rod may have been extended...
open the driver side door, and with a skinny finger, push that child lock rod back in towards the rear of the sliding door
use the passenger side as reference
once you pushed it in, you can now open it from the inside handle

1997 buick park ave 4 door right front door handle won,t work from the outside

Order the exterior door handle AND the clip that attaches the rod to the exterior handle from your local dealership ( any part in the salvage yard will have at least as much wear as the one U are replacing ) Also order a can of touch up paint matching your car. After you have the parts and have painted the new exterior handle, roll down the window and remove the interior door panel. ( instructions have been posted at 'replace door lock buttom' ) Two nuts, one on each side, hold the broken handle in place and must be removed ( DON'T loose them ). Loosen the rod from the clip at the top to allow a bit more room, But take note on the way it is attached ( you will need to reattach the rod to new handle ) To install new mechanism put the new clip on the rod, carefully place the gasket and the new handle in place and install nuts to secure. Test the door handle and make sure it works. Reinstall interior door panel.

How to replace '96 Ford Explorer driver side exterior door handle

You will need to remove the door panel to gain access to the handle. Roll the window up or down as needed to get to the nuts that attach the handle to the door. You will also need to remove a rod the goes to the door lock. You will see the rod after the door panel is removed. Good luck.
