MY 1997 ford thunderbird transmission is slipping between 40mph and 45mph....What should i do first?

When Im driving my 97 thunderbird my ****** slips sometimes between 35 and 45mph/It doesn't slip everyday but every third day or so. I have checked the transmission fluid level and it may be a little low...but in the past- everytime i have added transmission fluid to my older cars the ****** goes out completely within a month. so I am scared to put too much in. And if i add some should I use the lucas transmisison fix fluid or use reagular fluid?

Have you done any type of service to the transmission ?
Only put the fluid that your manufacturer recommends. It would help if you add more detail information as to how long you have been having this problem. Maybe how frequently this happens and under what conditions this happens most often.

SOURCE: automatic trans slips 92 ford explorer

I would have the transmission check if you plan on keeping the car a long time. The lucas oil is an additive for the oil. The additive is making the fluid a little heavier and tricking the soleniods or clutch and bands with a different pressures.

This is a temporary fix. The transmission over time is going to start to slip more and more.

SOURCE: 92 thunderbird transmission slipping, its about a

Absolutely; Automatic transmissions will slip for a number of factors but the the #1 cause is low fluid level closely followed by very old and brown fluid. Recomended fluid is MerconDexronII. Best of luck.

SOURCE: My 1997 ford explorer overheated and the transmission slipped

Tranny fluid may have been contaminated with coolant since tranny cooler lines go to radiator or condensor.
I would fix your leak on radiator, then completely drain tranny fluid and filter and replace.

My 1997 Ford Thunderbird LX will only move in Reverse. What is wrong with the transmission? It does not drive forward.

well unfortantly thereisnt any description as to what it does do when you put it in any of your forward gear does it try to go does it make any noises was it slipping prior to did you just turn it off one day it was going great prior to that and just no signs of anything just did it fords have very weak planatary gears in there transmissions if you **** it from park to drive thinking maybe it was going to stall so you quickly step on the gas pedal it can cause the planatary gear which is rite the pump to implode which in that case it needs to be rebuilt or replaced but however anytime you have a situation were you loose one or more gears you can go ahead and line it up for a transmission bill at a tranny rebuild shop

I have a 1996 isuzu rodeo and the transmission slips out in D and i can drive it in 3RD but when i get to 45mph the CHECK TRANSMISSION light comes on and flashes and when i get to 45Mph i can shift it to D...

It sounds as though one or more of the check balls in the valve body are sticking. Your best, and cheapest, way to find out is to have the fluid and filter changed. I know it sounds too simple but it works. Should this fail to resolve your issue, put one bottle of Lucas brand transmission treatment in and run it for a while. I have seen this stuff work miracles. Just one more thing, when your shift pops out of drive, can you physically see the shifter move? If so, all it requires is an adjustment. Thank you, Dana

1997 ford thunderbird rearend

Hello, If the tag is not present, you can get a rough estimate by putting a chalk line on the tire and on the drive shaft. With the vehicle jacked up spin the wheel and see how many times the drive shaft spins with a full tire rotation. If the shaft spins about 3 3/4 times you probably got the 3.73. If it spins a little over 4 times you probably got the 4.10. To get it exact you can remove the differential cover and count the teeth on the ring gear and pinion gear then divide the two to get the ratio. On the back of the rear differential there's a metal tag sticking out, with various numbers on it, like 8.8 for the 8.8" rear end, and probably a 3 73 or 4 10 for gear ratio. If there's a L between the numbers 3 L 73 then it is a limited slip. Also, the sticker in your door jamb will have info on it. One section will have the Axle code, 97 or R6 or something. The 8.8 should be plenty of enough axle for your motor but you can not go wrong with a ford 9 inch though becuase this will axle will handle any amount of horsepower you throw at it and the axles are easy to replace as well. I hope this fixes your problem.
