Its the ignition control module that is faulty.

If you have already put a new ignition control module in it before and you put the heat sink paste on the bottom of it then more than likely it has to be the ignition pickup coil .

If it has the HEI distributor in it then i would think its a ptoblem with the ground.Make sure the ground prong is in the distributor.

Change starter capacitor

Visual inspection to confirm dist rotor is turning. Check pick up coil under rotor, 2 small wires, green and white tend to break, pull on them slightly to check. The rotor can burn thru and short to ground. try these.

1993 Chevy Suburban will not start and has no spark

Check all fuses under the hood. Test the coil with an ohmmeter. Check for battery voltage on the coil primary with key on.
If all good, suspect the crank position sensor. A bad sensor will cause no spark.

2002 chevy 3500 duramax 6.6 ran hot now cranks but won't start

Check spark plugs, leads, distributor cap & rotor arm, fuel pump, fuel filter, coil pack(s), relays, replace any items that are suspect IE Fuel filter which has probably not been changed since new even though they should be changed on all vehicles every 18 months, all of this can be done at home & will save you a lot of bucks in mechanic/garage fees,

Change my spark plugs and distrubutor cap and the 85 ranger want start

You may have got the spark plug wires out of sequence.
Reseat the coil wire going to the center of the distributor cap Check the spark plug wires at the distributor against the firing order as follows:
The spark plug firing order is 1 - 4 - 2 - 5 - 3 - 6 The distributor rotor turns CLOCKWISE The engine cylinders / spark plugs are numbered :
firewall 3 - 6 2 - 5 1 - 4 front
Best wishes,

We've replaced the distributor cap and rotor in our 1985 Chevy C10 305 V8 and still have to fire TO the plugs. It won't start

This is a one piece distributor. It has the coil and pickup sensor all built in. Check and see if you have 12 volts on the large red wire that plugs into the cap while the key is on. (The other wire is for a tachometer if you have one). If you have power and there is no spark from your ignition wires, your pickup module is bad in the distributer. Very rarely have I seen a failed coil.

Spark plug order to distributor

For a 1985 Chevy S10 with a 2.8L engine the firing order is: 1-2-3-4-5-6 The Distributor rotation is clockwise.Take off the cap and bump engine till the rotor points to the no. 1 plug. this is the no.1 contact on the cap. follow rotation around the cap in order. {ie. 2,3,4 ect.} hope this helps.

1985 Grand Prix Spark Problem

The engine will run rough if only one wire has no spark but will run.
I think you have more than that.
For ignition spark system
1- check if you have spark at the coil then
2- check all wires spark with HEI spark tester
3- If only one wire has no spark then
3a- Distributor cap cracks inside or rotor defect
replace Distributor cap and rotor
4- replace wire defect or no spark test with HEI tester.
You will find your problem with this.
Hope it helps.
