I own an '03 Intrepid that, two weeks ago, stalled for no reason upon slowdown to a stoplight. Turned the car off, then back on, and it ran fine. Then later that day on my way home, the transmission got stuck in 3rd gear while trying to switch to 4th. The engine light is on and has been for a few weeks. If I take it to the dealer, they'll charge me $200, which is what they charged me in June to find out that I had to replace $40 worth of parts (which I can't remember at this moment). The stalling is intermittent and the high-rpm sticking is even less so. However, I know enough that at 45 mph the car should not be running 4500 RPM. My husband changed the filter and the tranny fluid over the weekend, but problems still exist. Suggestions?
Have the test run and deal with what shows up, keep your fingers crossed that maybe it is a cheap fix, but as a 30 year veteran of new car dealer repair shops quick fixes are few and far between, I hope you have good luck and yours is an easy one.
That is the computer that operates the transmission, if that is the problem you are home free, trans will no have to be overhauled at a cost of $1000's
If you don't fix it the transmission will be damaged, the present repair about $200-400

with IAC( idle air control valve) causing the problem.

Thanks, I wasn't aware that chain stores would check the code for free. Hubby said similar issues with his old Bronco and once he changed the trans fluid and filter, it fixed it. Thought was that maybe it would be a quick fix rather than the expensive one of having to replace the transmission, which I really can't afford to do right now. We don't have a Kragen around here but I might be able to find an Autozone or something similar. If I can get that done shortly, I'll find the code and let you know. Thank you for your help thus far. That stupid engine light was on for two months intermittently earlier in the year and would randomly turn off.
Thank you for your assistance. I stopped by Autozone and the code came back P0700. Everything I can find says transaxle control module. I don't know what that really is going to mean and it kind of has me scared. Thoughts?
Hmm... by home free, this means just a small charge??? I'm hoping (praying actually) that's what that means. I don't really understand it, so not really sure what to do at this point.

I have the same problem... Intrepids are junk and they should all be banned from the road and burn them all.
You say you have a check engine light on? if so test the computer system for trouble codes and post them here using this thread, Kragen will run this test for free, other chain parts stores will also do it for free. One more question why the transmission work, what made your husband think that might be the cause?
