Hi, its not good news im afraid by you describing that with the coolant cap off and revving the car causes the pressure to build up and push the water back out it sounds to me like the head gasket is on its way out, what you need to do is take it to a garage and dont have a compression test done you need to have a gasses test done, you can buy these yourself if you want to and what it does is this.

its a plastic tube with blue liquid inside it then you take the coolant cap off and place this in its place you then run the engine and rev it up then you squeeze the rubber at the end of the tube and it then sucks the air out of the coolant and through this liquid then if it detects gasses from the engine in the coolant then this turns the liquid green and this is then telling you that the head gasket needs changing.

please dont let it keep over heating as this will cause the cylinder head to warp and you would then need to get it skimmed to make sure its not warped, get the gasses test done as a compression test dont give you a true reading as the engine is not running when they do a compression test.

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

plz rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks

SOURCE: 1994 Honda Civic LX\overheating within 2 mile drive

Remove and raise upper hose at thermostat end and remove lower rad hose.
Fill rad with a hose and watch for flow from bottom rad hose and/ or bottom rad hose connecton.......water should fall though rad easily.
Honda rads are cheap.....any restriction....replace rad.

Remove thermostat....fill thermostat housing with hose and watch for water flow at bottom rad hose.
Flush good.

Remove heater hoses.......flush back and forth until a good flow is present "With heater control set to hot" if no or poor flow....replace heater core.

Stop leak can plug everything.

Also.......not likely causing over heating....but ....at your mileage,if you do not know if the timing belt has been changed.....CHANGE IT NOW!
Water pump is optional at this mileage.

SOURCE: 1996 honda civic dx is overheating

try making sure cooling fans are working by jumping them to the battery and see if they turn on. also could be the thermostat not opening and building up pressure.

Have someone do a Block test of the cooling system to determine if you have a headgasket problem seems likely that that is your problem, or pull the plugs connect a cooling system pressure tester and pump ot up to 20 psi or more and leave it there if it drops pump it up again, leave it there for an hour or so and keep looking into the cylinders for evidence of coolant if you see any you have a head gasket problem.

The most common overlook thing is you got a air pocket, so before you go spend your money turn Heather on full blast, open the radiator cap, car running look for air bubbles, takes patience cause you got to wait for the thermostat to open up, you must refill the coolant really really slow snail pace, some car have a bleeding valve others have two chamber on the overflow bottle, good luck, if that doesn't work change the thermostat first and if that doesn't work I'm afraid you may need to replace water pump. . water pump

You might have a crack in the radiator. i have an 92 accord and it has a plastic radiator (well the top and bottom of it are plastic) and it was leaking like crazy but if you looked at it when it was cool you could not see any visible cracks. So i suggest you start the car let it warm up enough so the thermostat and fans kick in. once the radiator has some pressure on it, it should be easy to see where the crack is. i hope this helps you out.

it is possible that when the water pressure rises in your radiator, and the radiator shoots the water into the reserve tank, that hose is not properly put on(happens alot when changing radiator) and the coolant leaks rapidly through there. another thing i suggest is observe your fan behavior. fans usually are only supposed to turn on for a couple of seconds, around 10 or 15. park your car, and let the car reach normal operating temperature. when the car starts to over heat, check to see if your fans turn off at all. if they do, then it is most likely the tw swith,or the water temperature switch. if you notice the fans stay running, then i suggest obesrving your hoses and replaing any that spill coolant because even a pressure test on your cooling system can miss a small pucture in a hose, which after a while will cause your coolant to leak, and your car to overheat. hope this helps. if still nothing, drop a comment and ill help you out somemore, but for now, this is the practical thing to do. hope this helps, goodluck.

My honda civic radiator blowup what can be the fault

Hi!!
A radiator can blow up due to several reasons, the main and most frequent are:
  • A faulty Thermostat.
  • Low or leaking Coolant,
  • A defective or unplugged Coolant Temp. Sensor,
  • Defective Water Pump,
  • Faulty Radiator Fan Relay or blown Fuse.
  • Faulty Radiator Fan Motor or wiring,
  • Clogged Cooling System passage or Radiator.
  • Worn out (too soft) Radiator Hoses.
  • Wrong size Radiator Cap.
  • Dirty A/C Condenser Coil (the coil in front of the radiator)
Good Luck!!! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

Check the cooling fan fuse first. if ok look for a coolant fan switch on the bottom of the radiator! Honda used to use one in line for the fan,to cycle off and on.It cycles the fan at certain temperatures, while driving or setting in traffic. You may be able to jump the plug terminals to run the fan, there will be no cycling, just running steady.
