91 miata mx-5 cuts out at 2200 rpms- cant smog- check eng. lite isn't on

91 mazda miata mx-5 cuts out around 2100-2200 RPMs. Doesn't matter if it's in gear or park. Check engine light doesn't come on so there's not any trouble codes for the on-board ECU diagnostics. Car was running fine ( though it was sitting for awhile ) untill I took it for a smog test. The air bag warning light does come on and flashes 4 times- pause -4 times, etc. Cant find or hear any vacumn leaks or worn wires/connections. Please help.

Sounds like petrol starvation - the pump may be in need of replacement.

1990 Mazda Miata!Ok so I asked this question the other day and here is where I am at now. Car starts right up but idle is low and press the accelerator and the rpms go up really slow. I tried to test

pull one plug wire at a time, observe engine hesitation to this if one or more cyl is defective you will notice no change in the engine you may have a faulty coil.

I have a 1999 Mazda 626 5 speed and my rpms seem to always be high weather I'm driving n town, 4th gear 30 mph 2100 rpm, or on the highway 5th gear 70 mph and rpms at 3100. This I'm sure is killing my gas...

check clutch for slipping condition, mayb due to worn clutch disc or a oil contaminated disc or a weak pressure plate not locking disc to flywheel therefore giving u a slipping condition and higher than normal rpms

Is it normal for my 91 miata reads 3900 rpms going 70mph?

It is pretty close, but doing the math....
3900 rpms 5th gear .814 diff gear 4.3 tire rpm = 1114
stock 91 tire size is 185/60-14 circumference = 71.31 inches inches/min=79457 mi/min=1.254 mi/hr=75.23
Completely stock, 3900 rpm gives you 75 mph. not the 70 you were claiming, but you could have smaller then stock tires (one inch less of diameter gives you 72 mph at 3900).
Hope this helps, Lars

2000 Mazda MX-5 1.8i intermittent misfire problem. (It's not a Miata but the website didn't have an option for a normal MX5!) Sometimes the car starts with what sounds like only 2 cylinders firing - it...

All MX-5's are MIATA'S. the coil pack may be bad. 3000 rpms at 20mph, sounds like the trans is slipping if it was an automatic trans. it helps when you tell EVERYTHING about the car, like what trans is has, ect.

91 miata mx-5 cuts out at 2200 rpms- cant smog- check eng. lite isn't on

The very first thing to do is replace the ignition wires. These were a very common problem on Miatas. Since you're taking them off, it would be a good idea to change the plugs as well. These things are really just maintenance, but one other thing to check is the condition of the intake hose. It is critical that the hose that runs between the throttle body and the airflow meter has no cracks or flaws. Sometimes they are hard to see because the hose has creases in it. It's a good idea to take the hose off and inspect it carefully. If it is broken in anyway, the airflow meter won't know how much air is entering the engine and fuel will be cut off.

Scraping noise when off gas and clutch is out

either the throw out bearing has failed ot the clutch plate hub has failed
possibly from the clutch plate being installed incorrectly and the hub springs are hitting on the flywheel bolts
