Hi guys - Problem howl in the rear right end. Took it to tire shop had it anelized as a rear bearing gone, when they put it on the hoist I could see that there was a leak, ok so we replaced righ axle seal and bearing (outer bearing, outer wheel seal, inner bearing), got the van back it still had the howl so I phoned back to see if the work had actually been done, they assured me it had and that I had to replace the differencial, please help it is in the right rear, the howl increases when you accelarate and decrease when you let off, if the differencial was the problem would it not quit howling when you let of the gas? Talk soon.....
Yes as the affected component is no longer under load Did they start the car on the hoist and run the vehicle to try and isolate the noise before doing the outers?2 post or drive on hoist.
As a matter of fact the diff can make noise on and off the gas, my own car a 1996 Corvette does this, it needs the ring and pinion replaced, is this what you are talking about when you say they told you that you needed a whole new differential?

well i dont know about the howl but i would definitely get the rotors resurfaced they are not supposed to stop at one point if the tire is in the air and spin it by hand the tire should come to a smooth slow stop and bearings are very tricky to spot i would replace them just to be on the safe side
Get a different shop to check all of the suspension components - if the struts both snapped, something is going on that's a much bigger concern than the wheel bearings. Look for bent control arms and other suspension components - check clearances and bushings everywhere in the rear, make sure nothing was installed backwards or forgotten. Struts don't just snap, and bearings should definitely not die every couple thousand miles. Also, have a dealer look at it, to make sure that things are installed properly. It won't be cheap there, but they might notice something that other shops routinely miss. I hate suggesting that ANYONE go to a dealership for service, but in this case, they're the most likely to notice something out of spec...
That could be anything from tires to differential or even a driveshaft carrier bearing on your Vette. The best thing to do is to see if it will make the noise while running it on a lift. If it does not, then the noise is most likely tire-related. If it does, then you can use a mechanic's stethescope to determine the source of the noise.
The first thing I would check is for a bad wheel bearing. If the noise lessens when turning left than I would look at the left front first.
Chalk the rear wheels or set the emergency brake. Put the transmission in neutral. Jack up the left side of the car. Grab the coil spring and rotate the tire by hand. If you can feel/hear the noise than your on the right track with the bad wheel bearing.
I can give you instructions on how to replace if you need them.
sorry did you get your tires rotated recentley if so that could be the tires ive had that happen to me before by not rotateing my tires for a while if thats the cause noise should go away if that not it its hard to tell you what a howling noise could be from is it only when your driveing and vehicle moveing
Hard to say what the problem is but it sounds like wheel bearings. yes you can fix it yourself but the bearings might need pressed on by a shop so just be prepared to have a ride to the machine shop once you take it apart. I had the same problem and it was an easy fix. Not saying yours is, but it shouldnt cost too much to fix it
Did you check your Transmission fluid and your differential fluids make sure there up and I don't know if you checked your rear wheel bearings or not, You can usually tell a wheel bearing when you are driving the car at highway speeds and you go around a corner and it get quite a bit louder Depending on what way you are turning if your turning right and it gets louder it will usually be the right side front or rear. the left usually the left front or back. some cases I have even heard Axles making a Howling Noise. Please let me know what you come up with. And Thanks in advance If I helped you out any. Bear001
