Today my Nissan Altima won't come out of park! I have to stick a pen down into the shift lock to pull the gear down the drive and reverse! I've never had any major problems out of this car, does anyone know what this problem could be?

I have a 2003 Nissan altima 2.5s with 75k miles, yesterday while parking it,I braked, shifted from drive to reverse and heard a clunk,I backed up and braked again and shifted back to drive and heard the same clunk.I thought one of the motormounts was probably going bad,but it was impossible I had just replaced them two months ago..Today while my wife went to the store she drove arround the block, stopped at the light then pressed on the gas and the car did the same clunk noise but only louder and would not wo forward or back in any gear.My transmission never gave me any problems at all,no sliping or hesitation.has any one had this happen to them.It seems like a gear came loose inside or something.axle shafts are fine....

On the japanese cars u need to press the brake pedal to release the lock on the auto transmission.this works via the brake light switch.if u have no brake lights the switch is probably not working.replace this and see how things go.

their is another switch on the boot lock or on the catch .check that its operating to turn light off.there also could be a cable shorting to earth between car body and switch

2013 nissan altima want shift out of park unless you use emergency release

PN ( park neutral ) shift solenoid malfunction , it is located next to the shift lever inside the center console frame , or ? the plastic lever to shift solenoid located passenger side of shift lever's bottom maybe broken preventing the switch to be activated so the shift lever can move to Park position .

My 2005 Nissan Altima won't shift out of park to drive it will if I use a screwdriver in the gear slot how do I fix this problem?

You take it to a qualified repair shop . You have a problem with shift interlock system . Safety system that won't allow the gear selector to move ,unless drivers foot is pushing the brake pedal . Has a brake switch , locking solenoid , an is electrical controlled by the shift lock control unit .

With car running The shift leaver willnot come out of park

When pressing the brake pedal, you should hear a click at the shifter, as the shift-lock mechanism is releasing the lock on the shifter. If the sound isn't heard, there may be a defective shift lock solenoid (which may require replacing entire shifter assembly, depending upon model). Otherwise you may need to remove access cover at top of shifter to insert a screwdriver to push down on the bypass latch so you can shift out of park. You will also need to push down on latch to go back to park.

I have a 2005 Nissan Altima will not shift out of park.I have replaced the shifter assemble, brake lights do work,Need help

If the floor shift lever wont move out of park, there foot brake lock that prevents it from moving until you depress the brake pedal and pull it out of park. I think the release is vacuum operated so try depressing the brake pedal a few time while trying to release. TerBo

My 2005 Altima is stuck in park. Automatic transmission, low miles starts right up and steering wheel is not locked. Help please!!!

http://www.nissanclub.com/forums/2005-2006-nissan-altima-se-r-discussion/225903-shift-lock.html

your owner's manual will tell you how to over-ride the shift lock. ususally there is a hole covered by a plastic piece, next to the shifter. pop out the cover and push the button to shift. The shifter will lock back up in park until you fix the problem. You may want to set the parking brake and use neutral when you park the car instead of " Park". That way you will not have to push the release button-it will eventually break.

make sure your brake lights work; as the shift lock is powered by the brake light fuse-replace as needed.

M.Bradbury 31.10.09 2004 Nissan xtrail tspec auto. gear shift stuck in park, have to use shift release button. Was told by Nissan that it is an ignition barrel fault i.e. worn so needs new ignition barrel...

it could be the solenoid that releases the lock on the shift, when you press the brake pedal the shift lock should release when the key is in the ignition and you can the move the shift, you need to check the soleniod near the TBar

2006 Altima won't shift into reverse or park

Is there any warning lights or malfunction besides this?? There are three main parts that may cause this: Park/Neutral safety switch(located on the transmission), Brake pedal switch(located at the brake pedal), Shift lock solenoid(located below the shifter). P/N safety switch prevents the shifter from shifting out of (P) or shifting into (R/P) while vehicle is in motion. Brake pedal switch sends a signal to release the shifter lock to shift out of park. Shift lock, locks the shifter as describe above and is located at the shifter base. I recommend inspection/replacement of the shift lock solenoid and P/N safety switch as its an intermitted problem. Hopefully this helps

Car shift seems locked
