it does not start on it,s own .you must stop put in park turn the key and then it starts back up

  • matacast Oct 13, 2008

driving down highway no blinker no bracks did not let up on gas speed made no difference car just shut off only lights to come on are same as when you first turn on egnition oil and battery when re started they go out immediatily may do the same after one mile or not for weeks

  • zenoist Nov 23, 2008

I have exactly the same problem that matacast describes.

Here are the symptoms, as detailed as I can make them:

    1. The problem occurs randomly. Whether the engine is cold or warmed-up makes no difference. Days may elapse between occurences.

    2. While driving or idling (as at a traffic light), the engine will simply shut off. No bucking, no coughing, no warning -- just "off".

    3. After gliding to a stop (without benefit of power steering or brakes), the engine is easily restarted by putting the transmission into Park and turning the ignition. It starts right up on the first try.

    4. Sometimes (but not always), the trip odometer zeroes out and the clock resets to 1:00.

    5. Of course, my mechanic can't find anything wrong and the **^%$%& car refuses to die while he's test driving it.

    6. I am willing to entertain the idea of demonic possession.

    Thanks.

I have exact same problem with our 2004 Volvo S80 T6. Has happened on 3 different occasions - car loses power, electrical, everything shuts off and need to coast to a stop to put car back into park and restart. Has happened to both myself and my wife seperately.

Volvo has looked at it 2x and can't replicate or diagnose.

I have a 04 Saturn and it randomly turns off with any warning. Lastnight I stopped at a light and BLAM!.... Nothing... All the lights were still on, radio etc.... I called the Saturn dealership and the guy told me to get out of the car.... roll up all the windows... turn off the radio and lock the doors.... let it sit a couple of minutes. I did all that and let it sit for 5min. It started.

My 2003 Volvo S60 completely powers down while I am driving. I brought it to the dealership and of course they could not duplicate the problem or come to any conclusions. They just send me on my merry way. What should I do now???????

I have a chrysler sebring 1997, Sometimes it wont start for some minutes, but it always starts eventually.
Other times, the engine would stop while driving, I have to park wait a few minutes before I can started again.
    What could it be???

My Chevrolet Malibu will ride fine for awhile, but then it shuts off when I stop or slow down to stop. Why is that?

Hi think what are you doing at the exact point when it cuts out as if it starts straight back up no cranking and struggling to start its got to be electrical is there any signs of missing ect just have a think and if you can give some more information we may be able to point you in the right direction yates210456

hi so lets see if i have got this right it won,t start in neutral but will in park so it will turn over in park but not in neutral when i say this i am asking the engine does not turn over unless in park is this the same first time you start the car or is this just after it cuts out or does the engine turn over in park and neutral but just won,t start in neutral and does the engine warning light come on or not plus what i am trying to find out is what are you doing when the engine cuts out for example i just turn the a/c on then it cut out or i just put my foot on the brake or i was turing right etc as its ok to guess what it might be it could be twenty things so we need to narrow it down yates210456

hi this is a trial and error job as if it starts up straight away there is no way of testing anything as it will test ok because everything will be working which means checking everthing do you let the tank run low as this could be as simple as the pumps picking something up off the bottom of the tank cuts the fuel off the vacuum holds it there till engine stops vacuum releases blockage goes away till it picks it up again i have had this twice before but rare i would be looking at hoses calasping under vacuum in the engine compartment as once again when engine stops weak pipe goes back to normall bad connections on the engine its the only thing that vibrates to excess and loosens connections dirty connections clean them up disconnect and clean them properly yates210456

SOURCE: while driving engine just shuts off

go down and have your alternator checked, it might be weak, causing a surge in power to the ecu, shutting the engine down, if was the battery the car wouldnt fire right back up, another thing might be the fuel filter/pump, these should be the first things to check.

Light Vibration and Humming sound in cabin

no posts on this old post. but no year, so .... as an example
to others posting, NO year?, NO answers.
but... here you go.
NOISE MOVING, ONLY !: (dangerous tests)
NO noise , in neutral, guning throttle like mad man.
or doing same in drive, all brakes set, wheels chocked,
DO the FSM A/T trannny Stall test. 5seconds max !, at 0MPH this puts full load on most the parts, MAKE NOISE NOW?
moving.....
cutting the engine , depends? in neutral? or coasting in gear.
risk 2, accidentally hitting park doing the test.
risk1:
selecting neutral and cutting the key (danger if the steering locks ) do so only off road, and no people about, no turns., no cliffs, no trees, no rocks. (flat desert or parking lot, at early hours..etc.)
Safety first.....
"and it goes off."<<< meaning the noise stops? key off?
btw:
the wheel bearing are under full load, now.
in turns the wheel bearing are under more load (huge in fact)
and the CVs run all the time.
but, if goes off means. no sound , it can be. (sure not wheel bearings)
1: exhaust parts, rattling. (running)
2: engine noise. (lots of possible) , but see test above.
3: A/T trans noise (its A/T right?) bad front, A/T pump? or TC?
or 150 other vastly complex A/T parts. bad.
when coasting , the CV do turn all the rear planetary gears ( and axle gears)
so they are not bad, as the quiet sound ending , proves.

keep in mind most parts, under torque love to make noise.
so cutting the engine, cuts most that torque, and hides the bad parts, with silence.

i use and remote electronic ear to find moving noise.
electronic stethoscope.
it has small microphones that clamp to suspected parts.
this removes most the danger in testing.

good luck finding it, if it still makes noise.

Elantra won't start and moves when it's in park

I'm going to say something happened to the cable between the shifter and the transmission. There is a switch on the transmission that prevents you from starting the engine in anything other than park or neutral. The transmission is probably in reverse or drive which would allow it to roll.
Someone would need to check the lever on the trans where the shift cable is attached.

I have a 2004 Chrysler Concorde Limited with a 3.5L engine - The car shut off on me as I was driving at 60mph. I coasted to a stop, put the car in park and it started right up. This has happened several...

I had the same issue that has evolved into the car starting and idling for 2-3 seconds then stalling. After doing this five times it won't turn over at all. All the dash lights are on but no turn over. After the car sits for appoximately 15-30 minutes, it starts and runs fine for 3-4 weeks then does it again. I was told this is due to the camshaft and crank position sensors needing replaced.

2001 grand prix gt freaking out!

Hello and yes this is a major noise. I would check your oil now right before you ever start the oil again. This noise may have been your engine locking up from really low oil levels and excessive heat from a lot of driving. If this is fine contact me again and we will address more problems if their is more. Thank You.
