I'm working on my mother's car which is not turning over. The key was allowing power when it was off and when the key was turned past the accessory mode it would not even click. Now, there is no power at all. The battery and alternator were checked by a local auto shop and found to be in good condition (based on their levels). I replaced the ignition switch as I thought that might be the culprit noting the loss of power when the key was turned to start. But, that has not solved the problem. Next I purchased a new starter as I was told a bad starter could drain the battery and create similar symptoms. My problem is I can't get the starter out. It is mounted parallel to the cross member and there is a rigid plastic shroud that covers the openings and sits between the starter and a mounting plate above the cross member. Any suggestions on getting the starter out?!?!? Or perhaps on some other solution?!?!
I really appreciate your help.

if the car sat for two years and was never started.... the motor could very well be seized.... to get at the starter .... is usually done from the bottom. If you can removed the starter... test it to see if it's working.... something else you can try if you can see the starter ... is to tap it gently with a hammer while someone attempts to start it...

SOURCE: starter just clicks, will not turn over engine
replace the starter, the selenoid is screwed (selenoid located on the starter) easier to replace the whole starter
SOURCE: new starter but car wont start
funny...you have just told me what is wrong with it!!!
check power in, power out at the ignition switch...likely it has failed. switch is on the top of the steering column under the dash and is sometimes easier to reach if you disconnect the column from the dash and permit the sterering wheel to rest on the seat.

The click you hear is the starter relay. Check for continuity thru relay with battery negative cable disconnected and switch in start position. If no continuity, it probably has burned contacts. Sometimes these can be taken apart and contacts filed/sanded cleaned.

It goes thru the dash circuits. Yes! add a wire from the alternator
output to the plus battery . The charge lite may be inoperative -
either on or off. You might want to put a fuse in that new line.
A cheap volt-ohm-meter would help you see if the alternator is charging
14-14.8 volt and the alterantor field is being energized.

I seem to have the same problem. The manual I just bought indicates that to get the starter out, the engine mounts have to unbolted and the engine raised slightly to get to the lower bolts.
