Have a 1995 Chevy K2500 pickup. The horn relay switch is good, horn is good but it will no sound when pushing the horn on sterring wheel. What could cause the problem?

  • Leif Erickson Mar 27, 2016

Just fixed my 95 chevy 2500 horn today... Was stuck on (middle of the night, of course) so I just pulled the fuse.. NONE of the info I found while researching this problem was correct or relevant. There was NO airbag. You just pull off the cover in the middle of the steering wheel - it just snaps on at the 4 corners. Remove the black wire from the steering wheel side and the red wire from the cover side. Then separate the rubber outer cover from the plastic insert and you'll see the metal contacts for the horn - it's a big die-cut piece of thin metal. You just have to bend it around the edges with a screwdriver until it springs up when touched at any point. Then just reassemble and connect the wires. Total time: 5-10 min.

Your horn button and wiring is ground for the coil side of horn relay, usually. My guess is problem with horn wiring in steering column, maybe a clock-spring issue? I saw two different years listed for your vehicle? It may not make any difference?

You most likely need a new clock spring rotating contact under the steering wheel, it is a plastic ribbon with wire in it to connect the horn button and other accessories to the steering wheel while allowing the wheel to turn.

Replace the push button selector assembly. Common failures. If that isnt the problem then the encoder motor on transfer case has failed. Try switch first.

your transmission has possibly been rebuilt with stronger springs put in. No worries. have been running mine for along while without any problems. Better this than slipping, but it is a bit annoying.

SOURCE: My horn quit working but the relay and fuse are

It sounds like the switch itself, on the steering wheel, are not making contact. I'm guessing that if you can remove the front part of the steering wheel you could check and clean the contacts and also give you a chance to test the horn, while you are in there.

I just wired a new horn on my 97 Nissan and it won't work. I had wired the same horn weeks prior and it only worked for a week. The relay and fuse are good. Should I check the sterring wheel?

Make sure all your connections are good. If the horn relay clicks when you push the horn, you're getting power to it but you might not be getting power out. Get a test light and make sure you have juice at the relay going to the horn and at the horn connections.

Most vehicles have a horn relay, which should be in a fuse box under the hood. Toyota is usually pretty good at identifying the various relays and fuses in the fuse box. If your original horn was shorted, it very well could have welded the contacts in the horn relay together. Also an aftermarket horn could be drawing more amperage than an original equipment unit, causing the fuse to burn. This last statement is purely conjecture.

Horn will not blow when I push the buttons on the sterring wheel

check the power to the horn with a test light.have someone push the horn button and look for power at horn.next listen for a click sound it will come from the horn relay if it is working.find the horn and apply power to the horn and it should honk.if not replace horn.other wise there is a contact in the steering wheel that it touches .that ring or contact might be at fault.or relay if no click heard.

1985 Toyota Pickup Horn

Probably the switch in the steering wheel, or fuse, but usually horn fuse works other things too such as cig lighter or radio. If everything else is working fine, then to troubleshoot you'll need a testlight. I would start with the wiring harness where the steering collumn plugs in and decipher which wire is the horn wire. Put the test light clip on +power, then check the wires on the collumn side one by one, pushing the horn button on each one. The horn switch is the wire that makes the light blink when you push the button. If you try all the wires and none make the light blink, then its probably a problem with the horn switch in the s. wheel. Does it have an after market steering wheel? Because aftermarket wheels often have crappy horn switches in them. Also could be a horn relay if it has one. If you listen carfully while pushing the horn, you should hear the relay faint clicking. If you hear this, then the switch is working, but the relay might not be. Follow the sound to find it if you hear it. Test all sides of the relay with your light. Should get power constant on one term, and the other two should light when the horn button is pushed. Hope this helps. Cheers.
