There should be a fuse also do you have a key fob. With rear hatch button on does that work if not check fuses for the body controller. Also check for power and grounds at rear hatch motor/actuator .
Good luck Steve

SOURCE: bulb on license plate is out and cruise control. 2004 cavalier

The two problems should not be related to one another. The the fuses for the park lights and the cruise control. The license plate bulb is wired along with the rest of your park lights. If the rest of the park lights are working then check for power and ground at the bulb holder. If you have both there, check the bulb and the fit again. If no power or ground is there you will have to trace the wires. If the fuse is not blown to the cruise control, more information is required to trouble shoot any further.

Testimonial: "Ok..I will see if it is the wiring. I think it is strange that the cruise worked until changing the bulb on the plate. Thanks"

How do I open the hatch

Unfortunately, the 04 Golf does not have a back-up release lever on the inside of the trunk lid so there are only a few options. You can try and get the trunk motor/latch to work again or remove the plastic trim on the inside of the hatch to gain access to the inner workings.

The trunk latch is released by a electric motor when you press the release button on the drivers door or by holding down the trunk release button on the remote. If you can hear the electric motor in the hatch moving when trying either of these methods, then your problem is most likely a broken plastic lever that connects the motor to the latch.

Some Golf/GTI models had a lock cylinder in the exterior handle on the hatch that can be used to gain access to your interior.

If none of these methods are working for you, then the last resort is to climb into the interior and remove the trim from the back of the hatch. There are screws tucked into the grab handle pockets on the trim that need to be removed before pulling the plastic off (the trim panel is held on with metal spring-like clips that sometimes come off the plastic and stay on the hatch and can easily be removed from the hatch and re-installed onto the plastic trim.

Hope this gives you a good place to start.

If the fuse is okay, check to see that the latch is not bound in some way, and that it is properly lubricated. A dry latch sometimes will not release.

Rear hatch stuck

Emergency trunk release if you need it open now. from there you could try to fix the problem or take it to your dealer, you may still be under warranty 1. Remove trim plug to expose the access hole in the trim panel. The access hole is located on the inside of the liftgate. 2. Use a tool (flathead screwdriver) to reach through the access hole in the trim panel. 3. Pry the left release lever up to the unlock position. Pry the right release lever up to unlatch the liftgate. 4. Reattatch the trim plug. this information can be found on page 2-13 of your owners manual
