It seems to still have a clutch but when you put it in gear there is no drive
SOURCE: geargox for mk 4 1.8 gti
The way to find this out is simple, on the housing of the trans there is a code, a serial number, that will tell you what type of gearbox is required for this model.

The clutch is hydraulically operated.
You may have some broken band springs on the pressure plate; if so, it is going to get much worse as others break too.
The throwout bearing could also be disintegrating.
Diagnosing the exact problem will almost surely require pulling the transmission.

CHECK FUSE.IF ALL GOOD COIL OR COILS IS GETTING POWER.THEN COIL HAS A OPEN IN IT.NOW IF COILS ARE GOOD AND YOU NOT GETTING SPARK.YOUR PROBLEM IS IN THE IGNITION POWER TRANSISTOR.OR ENGINE SPEED SENSOR.YOUR BEST BET LET THE VOLKSWAGEN DEALER TEST THE IGNITION SYSTEM.BECAUSE IF YOU SHORT THE POWER TRANSISTOR OUT.YOU ARE GOING BE OUT OF A LOT OF MONEY.BUT IF YOU GOT ONE COIL NOT FIRING REPLACE IT.IF STILL NO SPARK LET THE DEALERSHIP. CHECK IT OUT.
