Thermostats do not keep water in a radiator
There purpose is to maintain the correct coolant flow rate so as to maintain correct engine operating temp
The cap will be the problem if it is a radiator cap/ pressure cap
always check coolant level in the radiator
take it to a radiator shop and have cooling system pressure test dine to check for leaks
SOURCE: radiator cap/problems
doo a pressure test ,you might se the leak ,if not then you might have an internal leak,if you start to drive and see lots of white smoke its likely you have an internal leak.

have u replaced the thermostat? also have it checked for a leaking engine cylinder head gasket.
SOURCE: oil in radiator, car did not overheat
The oil cooler tank on the side of the radiator has cracked and allowed oil into the cooling system. Replace the radiator and you will need to flush the cooling system A LOT. and be careful driving it for a while, the mixture can take a long time to clear out of the head which can cause it to overheat.

The PCV valve may be plugged causing normally removed crankcase pressure to be pushed out of the oil cap. Replace the valve.

I'm doing one now, it's not hard but it does take a lot of time, remove the obvious stuff in way, remove fan remove plastic tray under car, remove mounting bolts hoses etc and remove
