Question about 2001 Hyundai Elantra

Elantra does not start

My 2001 Hyundai Elantra won't start. The engine stopped while driving and it won't restart. The battery is fully charged and working well. Lights come on and the engine turns. The timing belt is good and tight, and it moves when the starter is engaged. I don't have fuel pump actuation, no spark, no radio, and no check engine light. Fuses and relays are under the hood. The fuses all look good, but I can't tell about the relays. A year ago I installed a new radio. I'm wondering if maybe a wire worked loose and is shorting or grounding. Could faulty radio wiring be the problem? Or does it sound like the ignition switch, or ecu?

Are you sure you are looking at your timing belt? Or is it just the drive belt? How do you know your battery is fully charged? Did you check it with a volt meter? How do you know it is not getting spark? Did you listen for the fuel pump to come on when you turn the key? I agree with Mr Boyd that it does sound like a cam/crank sensor. If it's a dual sensor. The crankshaft position sensor controls the spark. But you said the radio stopped working at the same time? That sounds like a fuse or fusible link. You should have a fuse box in the passenger compartment as well as under the hood. Look for a fuse labeled IGN (ignition).

I would check the safety trip switch, located above the fuel tank. If you go over a large bump or are knocked by another vehicle, they are designed to turn off power to the fuel pump.

Sounds like a cam/crank position sensor
run the fault codes to check

SOURCE: location of oil filter on a 2008 hyundai elantra

It is located under the alternator. If you are looking down at the engine, it is to the far left. If you are under the car it is to the far right before the oil pan.

Hyundai elantra periodically will shift hard from second to third gear and then will not shift into overdrive. the check engine light will come on. if i shut off the engine and restart it will shift...

I'm not that user, but go to Autozone and have them scan your computer for the code to your check engine light. It will point you to which sensor to replace, as this is likely your culprit. There are two speed sensors which are critical to transmission shifting on this car. The one I'm familiar with is on the passenger drive axle, but when mine went out (I have a 2001 Elantra as well) I didn't have any of these issues you describe. I don't know where the other sensor is, but that's where I'd suggest starting. Get it fixed quickly though, the web-boards I've read warn that these symptoms can be pretty ******* this little transmission. Good luck!
