Brake Shift interlock system problem probably . This is a safety system that will not let you move the gear selector from park ,unless your foot is pressing on the brake pedal . Electrically controlled locking solenoid , wiring , brake switch used to control this .

    Shift Interlock System
A brake/shifter interlock system consists of the following:

    ignition switch (11572)
    brake pedal stoplight switch (13480)
    brake shift interlock module
brake shift interlock solenoid assembly (attached to key interlock assembly)
    necessary wiring
On floor-shift vehicles, the ignition/shifter interlock cable (3F719):

locks the floor shift transaxle range selector lever in the PARK position when the ignition switch is in the LOCK position.
requires the floor shift transaxle range selector lever to be in the PARK position to turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.

SOURCE: My 2003 Mercury Mountaineer Gear Shift is stuck.

See if u have brake lights. This is what energizes the shifter solenoid. There are 2 fuses u can check both are in the under dash fuse panel. Fuse 23 (15amp) and fuse 26 (7.5amp).
To get it out of park turn igntion switch on stopping just short of engerizing the electronics then u should be able to get it out of park and into neutral.

SOURCE: '00 Mercury Cougar Wont get out of Park. gear shifter is stuck

sounds like your brake/shift interlock solenoid is not releasing.
Your owner manual will tell you how to bypass in emergency.
Check your fuse first. fuse panel on instrument panel.

Please rate as fixed if this helps.

Fuse 23 - 1 5 amp
Fuse 34 - 7 1/2 amp

check enigne light not related.

The selector lever lock can be moved mechanically out of position ”P" when for example the battery is disconnected or completely discharged.
Using a ball point pen or similar item as an unlocking lever, push forward and hold in position.

Move the selector lever out of position "P".

NOTE: If the selector lever is moved back to ”P" it is re-locked.

SOURCE: MERCURY SABLE - NO PROBLEM WITH TRANS. YESTERDAY

First check the transmission fluid level. If the car is cold it should be on the bottom line or other cold indicator in the transmission dip-stick. If the fluid (transmission oil) is within specs try giving it a tune-up. If the fluid is low you obviously have a leak. It could be leaking from the transmission pan gasket or the fluid cooling hoses that go to the radiator. Let me know what you find.

2000 ford mercury 3.0, shifter wont move. had a fender bender, put it into park and it wouldn't come back out.

For car not changing gears it can be shifter assembly issue, or it can also be transmission issue. Get the shifter assembly inspected with ignition OFF.

For more troubleshooting, I suggest you to get the Following help link checked, its complete step by step procedure to inspect gear shift issues: -----

My 1998 mercury sable won't come out of park but

That happen to me, and A guy helped me. The problem maybe down by the brake pedal, but above the brakes you may have pulled the wires a loose with your feet, or something and the wires need to be put back together maybe with black electrical tape. Definitley have to go down to the floor, and look under where the brake pedal is.

My 2002 Mercury Sable will not shift into gear, will shift out of park, but will not go into any gear.

How many miles and how does your transmission fluid look?

Get car ot normal oper. temps and put on level ground. Put trans thru all gears with foot on brake. Put into park, leave running and check level. If level is low, this could be part or all of your problem. If level is fine and trans fluid is not brown or burnt, you have an electronic problem.

If fluid checks ok, let me know if you have a Check engine light on, ABS light, etc.

Hope that helps.
