1993 Honda Accord-shuts off while driving/won't start up

My car stopped working while I was driving today. There was no warning, it just turned off. When I tried to start it again it would turn over, but not stay on. The rpms will go high on the car, but then it just goes back to zero-and the lights on the dash automatically turn off.

I got my car to start back up once after it did this, but then it would not turn back on later.

same problem, i narrowed it down to the ignition system and i belive that the distributer may be thre problem. When the car warms up it shuts off and then has no spark. ???

My car ran and then just died when I stopped at the light. Then it would just turn over and not start at all. The lights would stay on.

i had same dilemma, replaced the distributor with new kit. problem was solved.

Well I got it. It was the ignition control module located in the distributer. Cost about 70 dollars. when it would heat up to about the normal opperating temp. it would get fowled up and kill all the spark. Thanks for the help.

I had the same problem. My car would shut off without any warning, I changed my Main Relay located under the dash, right below the change slot on the left hand side. I have not had a problem since. The price at Napa Auto parts runs about $68.00. This should fix your problem.

Trust me its not your fuel pump or filter. lots of people had made the same mistake.

I just had this happen, too. It was very intermittent, occuring once a week or so. When it failed, it would kill the engine and tach drops to 0 RPM. Sometimes, the engine would come back alive within a few seconds (like ththing happened). Other times, it would die for 10 minutes to a few hours.

I replaced the distributor (which includes the Ignition Control Module) and I am hopeful that is the fix!!

fyi...long time later... that was the fix. distributer/ICM replacement

SOURCE: i have a 1993 honda accord that will start but won't stay cranked...what's wrong?

A few things to check:

Wrong spark plugs installed - causing too many misfires
Timing problem - the ECC (Engine Control Computer) will give up after a short while if it cannot get the engine to operate in correct time
clogged fuel filter
clogged air filter
clogged fuel strainer
worn distributor cap/rotor
failing fuel pump
vacuum leak
faulty ECC (Engine Control Computer)
ignition coil failing - the ECC will stall the engine if too many misfires are detected.
wireset - faulty spark plug wire(s) causing too many misfires.
faulty fuel pressure regulator
EGR valve faulty

If the engine is misfiring alot, it will **** the resulting unburned fuel out the exhaust pipe, so check for this as well.

1998 honda accord shut off while driving and won't start; next day it does.

One common problem with Honda cars is the fuel pump relay.
I would check that first. Do you know if you have spark to the plugs when it won't start ?

My car has been running fine. Starts each morning once to drive kids to school. An hour later for me to drive to work. But for the last two mornings won't start back up after working 4 hours. I noticed...

Sounds like the alternator is going out the slow way.
Youre kinda lucky because almoat all alternators go out without warning.
Most Autozone shops or places like it will run a test for free.
Good luck,Gary
