I think it is the CPS "crank shaft position sensor" If this sensor goes out, it don't know what position the crank is in so therefore it will not fire. This is a BIG problem with the cherokee. The part is about $60 and usually located where the transmission meets the back of the engine. Very easy to replace. Since I'm not there it's not 100% sure but I would not be scared to say 95% since it is an issue. Good Luck...

The crankshaft position sensor was seriously problematic in those old jeeps. It's located towards the top of the bell housing slightly to the driver's side I think.

I had this problem on my Jeep. The problem is in the ground. Clean or replace your battery terminals, that did it for me. Also check the ground to chassis connection, make sure its clean and tight.

I have a 1996 Jeep Grand cherokee with the 5.2l v-8 engine. Last week I started it, and it ran for about 1 minute before shutting off. The engine cranks, but no ignition. I replaced the Crankshaft position...

Time to meter voltage. Start with the 12V circuit. Are you getting voltage at the coil. Does the voltage fluctuate when the engine cranks? If yes to both check the high voltage circuit. Start with the coil then the distributor then each plug. You should be able to find where the spark is failing.

1996 jeep grand Cherokee will turn over but not start. weak spark. fuel at fuel rail. replaced PCM 1 month ago. replaced crank shaft sensor 3 months ago....

See if your getting spark at the ign. coil first (passengers side on that year) if you are change the crank shaft sensor making sure you mount it as close to the engine as possible so it never gives you trouble again.

I would make sure you have voltage to the coil. Could be a fuse or relay problem. Is the check engine light on when you turn the key on ?

The power is on and off so starting is hard

Need to try the crank shaft position senor. It work off the turning of the crank. It the sensor goes bad then the engine has no idea what position the crank is in, so therefore you won't get it to start. I had to replace a few of these on Jeeps , this is a big problem for Jeeps.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee No Start

I would be thinking that there is a good chance that you need to be checking out replacing the computer, if you aren't getting any communication with the proper scan tool then the computer isn't communicating with anything in the vehicle...... I would have guessed first off that the ignition control module might be bad but that is obviously part of the computer also, I would be looking in that direction.

1996 jeep grand chrokee turns over will not start, replaced cam shaft censor and ECM, and coil. distibuter cap looks bad has some white dust inside and contacts burnt. could it be that?

If you did not replace the CRANK sensor on the back side of the motor this most likely is the problem and a very common one at that.this controls spark and injector pulse, unlike the cam sensor which just shows when #1 cilyder is up.
