Overcharged car battery

I just put in a new car battery and have driven it about 15 miles and the car wouldn't start. I checked the voltage with a vom an it measured 20+ volts across the terminals. My alternator has less than 1000 miles on it and the first time this happened I replaced it. I have just replaced a woren hormonic balancer. Whats up. Tom

SOURCE: can't get hormonic balancer bolt

This bolt shouldn't be that tight there it a lock washer under it . Im not positive on your vehicle but it may be a left handed thread if the crank spins counter clock wise while the engine is running its vary posibable. Try turning the bolt the other way. I don't what else to tell you i've never had a problem with the bolt the hormonic balancer is a differant story many storeies about them good luck

Just purchased a 1994 Firebird, took it in for a smog test, and it failed at 15MPH, measuring 522 while the max allowed is 483. Car had been in storage for two years with the battery disconnected. Also low...

522 what? Get it registered. Yes it needs to be driven, Yes do an oil change. Add some injector cleaner, I recommend Chevron TECHRON fuel system cleaner. The shop that is checking it most likely knows what it needs to be repaired. If you dont trust them to properly repair it, find a different shop.

I have a car battery that is giving me problems. The acid was low. So I heard you can substitute water. So I did that and when I leave the car running the water is coming out on top. Is that ok? If not...

If you added any water to the battery I hope it was distilled water. Anyway if the battery is "boiling over" then I would inspect the charging system. It sounds like the battery is being overcharged by the alternator possibly caused by a failed voltage regulator. I wouldn't drive any more, as a severe overcharge can cause the battery to burst sending acid everywhere.

2002 Saturn SL1, 72K miles. Hasn't been driven in

Single click? More battery is needed. Id change the battery, or slow charge it.
Might also be the security system shutting down the starter. Common on GM vehicles. Heres a link on that. http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/

Charging

Most likely it is the voltage regulator that's going bad which allows overcharging. this is inside the alternator, so it most likely needs replacement. you could pull it out and take it in to most auto parts stores and they would check it to make sure.
