Headlamp replacement How do I replace the headlamps on the cavalier?

  • petermiele Oct 07, 2008

Got as far as the bolts from the headlamp - but afterwards could not get the headlamp off of the vehicle.  Seems to be held in place by something on the turn signal lamp.  Headlamp seems to move freely, but held by something that I can't see.

If you do not have a sealed beam assembly, then remove the four screws on top...when the headlight assembly comes out unclip the harness from the bulb assembly. Pull the bulb out and replace...don't touch the halogen bulb with your fingers...just the plastic base.

I had this same problem, I used this blog link to replace the bulb in both of my headlights. I'll be honest here and tell you the passenger side is much easier than the drivers side. I'd recomend two of you be there for the first one, after that it's a one person job.

SOURCE: headlamp replacement

1. Unplug the three-prong electrical connector.
2. Pull off rubber boot on back of headlamp
3. A spring clip holds the bulb in the assembly. Un-hook one side and swing the clip back.
4. Slide the old bulb straight out.
5.Wearing disposable gloves so that skin oil doesn't get on the new bulb, open the new bulb's package and insert the new bulb straight into the holder, making sure it goes all the way to the front. The middle electrical prong should be up.
6. Swing the retaining spring back and re-clip.
7. Slide the rubber boot back on the rear of the assembly, making sure that the electrical prongs are exposed.
8. Re-connect the three-prong electrical connector.
9. Turn on lights and make sure it works.

Head lights on 02 cavalier low beam not working

Headlamps
The headlamps are operated when the driver places the headlamp switch in the HEADLAMP position. The LT HDLP and RT HDLP fuse in the IP fuse block, supply battery positive voltage to both the left and right headlamps. The low beam and high beam circuits continue to the headlamp switch. Depending on the position of the dimmer switch, either the low or high beam circuit will now have a path to ground. Ground is provided at G204. The low beam and high beam circuits also provide the body control module (BCM) with both low and high beam inputs. The headlamp switch includes the dimmer and the flash-to-pass switch.
If the headlight switch is left in the HEADLAMP position, the headlights will remain on until turned off or the battery runs dead.

The ground under the battery has nothing to do with the headlamps . G-204

2001 Chevy cavalier headlights have high but no low or daytime running lights. Can jump the DLR relay and lights turn on replaced the headlight switch and still no dims.

You have two voltage sources for the headlamps. the right headlamp fuse and the headlamp circuit breaker, both hot all the time, when relay is not energized. Does that make sense? The top wires in diagram for headlamps is voltage. Use a test light to test. The bottom wires in the diagram from headlamp are grounds. Your headlamp and dimmer switch are on the ground circuit. Just between me and you, I don't like drl. Just my opinion.

How to Adjust a Headlamp Beam on a 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier...

When you replace the headlamp assembly in the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier, you must also adjust the headlamp beams. Like most vehicles, there are two screws located on the headlamp assembly that control the vertical and horizontal direction of the headlamps. Proper adjustment is necessary for adequate visibility during nighttime driving; bad adjustment can make it difficult for you to see or make it difficult for oncoming drivers to see, creating a potentially dangerous situation. You can adjust the headlamp beams yourself with a screwdriver in about 15 minutes.
Park the Chevrolet Cavalier on a flat surface facing a wall or garage door approximately 15 feet away. Park the Car so that it is perpendicular to the wall.

Lift the hood and remove the plastic trim panel above each of the headlights. There are three plastic fasteners that secure the trim panel; pry the fasteners out using a flathead screwdriver. Lift the trim panel up to remove. There are two adjusting screws beneath the trim panel, one on the top of the headlamp assembly and one along the outer side of the headlamp assembly.

Turn the headlights on so that they shine on the wall. Ensure the headlights are on the "dim" setting.

Adjust the vertical bolt, located on the top of the headlight assembly near the center of the vehicle to raise or lower the headlight, using a crosspoint screwdriver. Turn the screw counterclockwise to lower the headlamp beam; turn the screw clockwise to raise the headlamp beam. Adjust the headlamp so that the beam is below a driver's eye level.

Adjust the horizontal bolt, located on the outer side of the headlamp assembly to move the headlamp beam right of left, using a crosspoint screwdriver. Turn the screw counterclockwise to move the headlamp beam right; turn the screw clockwise to turn the beam left. Adjust the headlamp so that the beam shines straight ahead or slightly toward the center of the vehicle.

Replace the plastic trim panel and fasteners and close the hood. Warning: raising the lights too high can make it difficult for other drivers to see you.

2001 Chevrolet Cavalier, service light came on brights indicator came on, and headlamps flickered out. Changed relay, checked headlamp switch. Where to now?

I would check the voltage at the battery while the engine is running. If over 15 volts , your voltage regulator is shot , and your headlights cooked.

If that is problem , alternator will have to be replaced.
