87 4Runner 22RE problem

EGR valve sticking or bad vacuum leak, might be a place to start. I presume the ECM, control module are functioning properly?

Unfortunately, these vehicles are known to have transmission problems. You'll need a rebuild, or you'll have to buy a rebuilt or new transmission and install it.

I recommend going with a fresh rebuild or buying a rebuilt/new transmission. Junkyard or "used" transmissions from these vehicles are prone to the same problems that yours is currently having. Most rebuilders such as Jasper will "improve" the design of their rebuilt transmissions to prevent known internal problems from happening again, and the other upside is they have a warranty!

well try removing the distributor and spin it around half way 180 degrees then try. it seems you are off there are two ways to install the distributor because two turns for the crank equal one for the distributor.if still wont start call on me again i will help you .

Spray the intake manifold on cylinder number where it bolts to the head with intake cleaner and see if the rpm's change and the miss goes away temporarily.There was a problem at the factory with the intake gasket being creased on cylinder number 1. This issue tends to be a lean misfire issue.

Call the dealer or Jasper. I dont think you can buy a "new" one. all wil be remanufactured, and Jasper has a 3 year/ 100k warranty.

Try testing for partially blocked exhaust

You can buy rebuilt engines through your local auto parts store or look on-line for companies like Jasper. Also, some mail order auto parts dealers like JC Whitney sell engines.

Jasper engines are rebuilt by that company and are exactly the same as the engine made by the manufacturer. (ford is ford, chevy is chevy etc.) Therefore if you have a chevy engine built by jasper, then it is exactly the same as a chevy unless it was built to other non-factory specs (stroker crank, different compression pistons or performance cam) Without the original "sheet" on this, the only way to tell what's in there is by taking it apart and measuring it.

The Difference 1- is the Price
On used How many miles have the USED engine
How was the maintenance on the Engine. ( Never know)
The warranty Used only 30 days.
But is the Cheap option. depend of your money.

They have 2 warrantys, One 36,000 miles,
The other ONE is 72,000, wrote on papers.
They give to you A complete warranty.
If the ENGINE fail During the Warranty time. they will give to you an other engine, and pay for the Labor to Remove and Install the Second Engine.
If you do with JASPER ASK to the Installer for the Warranty papers if he buyit.
