Your thermostat which closes when cold to let the engine warm up and opens when the water gets hot and lets it circulate through the radiator. If they stick closed your engine overheats in short order. When they stick open it takes forever and a day for the heater to warm sufficiently. This also makes the engine use more fuel. If your thermostat is indeed stuck open it is easy to tell. With the engine cold, take the radiator cap off and start the engine. If it is stuck open water will immediately circulate as seen at the radiator cap opening. If the thermostat were operating normally you would not see water moving for 5 or more minutes of idling. You should always drain the coolant, flush and refill every 2 years. Never ever grab that garden hose and put tap water in your radiator. They come from the factory with distilled water (about $1 a gallon at any grocery store) which has no minerals in it. The minerals in tap water promotes rust and scale build-up in the cooling system reducing it's efficiency. Don't use tap water unless you WANT to have problems.

Temperature Gauge read HOT instantly

If the gauge does not go back to cold when the engine is cold, it could be the gauge on the dash. I am assuming the gas gauge drops with the key off.
You could unplug the temp sensor on the engine to see if it makes any difference.

Temperature gauge on 2000 catera is staying on cold as if caris not heating up

If it is actually warm, but the gauage has not moved, you probably have a bad temp sensor that feeds the guage. On some cars there are 2 temp sensors, 1 for the computer to it knows how much fuel to give based on coldness, and one for the guage that just shows you in the dash what the temp is. The other 2 ideas would be a bad gauge and a bad wire/cable from the sensor to the gauge. There is not much else it could be if in fact the reading is wrong.

Temperature gage fluctuates when driving my 1996 mazda protege

Well sounds like first start your car record where the temp needle reads, then let the engine warm up (with out driving) then rev the engine to about 3500-4000rpm a couple times does your needle move at all record then hold your rpm at 3500 for about 5-10 sec does this get the gauge to drop? sounds like you may "if not over heating at all and coolant level and circulation is good" have a circuit problem, you can test this by going to auto zone and ask for a scan to be done on your car when the plug into your OBD 2 ask them to go into DATA STREAM and then check to see what temp your ECM thinks the engine coolant is at does it match your gauge at idle and at 3500rpm if not its a faulty circuit

Possible thermostat but more likely fan belt is slipping when idling causing waterpump to slow or even stop spinning. Tighten or replace fan belt that runs over waterpump pulley

What causes a 97 acura 3.2 tl to over heat

Many possibilities. 1st check coolant level when cold, make sure it's at the proper level, and a 50/50 mix (half water half coolant). Is the engine temp getting too high, or is it actually 'boiling over' with evidence of steam and coolant loss? Don't drive it when the engine temp gets too high, you can cause other serious problems. When the temp gauge starts to climb, check under the hood and see if the cooling fan is going on. It's possible the fan is not operating due to sensor or switch failure (they signal the fan to go on and off as required), or it can be a fan motor that's shot, a thermostat that is not opening properly, a radiator plugged up with rust and corrosion from neglecting cooling system maintenance. So as you can see, there are many reasons for your car to overheat. Answer my questions above, and I'll try to help you pinpoint the cause.

Temp gauge stay on cold.

Switch ig. on, ground the sender unit wire for about 3 seconds see if the temp. gauge moves, if so change sender unit, if not then it is a faulty gauge reader.
