Internet search suggests faulty alternator, after testing and cleaning battery cables, but some after market alternators also continued to display the error, so be careful in purchasing a replacement alternator.

STARTER & ALTERNATOR REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES FOR 1998 Volvo S70 AUTOMOBILES

Alternator, Replace -> With Air Conditioning -> Without Air Conditioning

With Air Conditioning

• Disconnect battery ground cable at battery.
• Detach pipe from control module box.
• Remove auxiliaries belt.
• Remove power steering pump and place it on top of engine.
• Remove upper bolt.
• Remove bolts common to alternator and compressor; lower bolts on alternator and upper bolts on compressor.
• Raise and support vehicle.
• Loosen lower bolts for compressor (so that there is some clearance).
• Remove air baffle.
• Lower vehicle.
• Disconnect warning lamp positive lead and connector from alternator.
• Pull alternator upwards/away.
• Remove alternator from vehicle.

alternator most likely entered the spirit world--batt usually takes over from reserve supply--hav it tested at a discount place--scan vehicle too if posible

I need a new alternator as well (2006 S40, 2.4ti, 80K miles) and the lowest quote I'm getting is $875. The dealer wants $950, an independent mechanic I trust quoted $930. You would think they could replace the part without all the extra nonsense -- in most other cars, they probably could. Volvo has made it unnecesarily difficult with the way they've designed this car. This is the first and last Volvo I will ever purchase.

The mechanic who quoted $875 also said he has someone in town who could replace the non-working parts of my current alternator and get it working again for about $575. But I wouldn't have a car for 2 full days.

Posssible charging system fault. Alternator/battery etc. If the battery is not charging and you use vehicle it will breakdown

first check your compression if that checks out have your alternator tested it can cause the engine not to start

You'll need a torque wrecn and a degree tools (most auto parts stores sell them). Torque sequence is 15lbs, then 37lbs then 130 degrees.
