Turning the key will move the button up and down (showing unlocked) but outside latch won't move to open trunk. I would like to get at the mechanism to see what is broken but am afraid of breaking the plastic panels trying to remove them. Can they be removed from the inside, if so how do I get it over the button?
Most often, access to the trunk is achieved by folding the rear seat down. If not, remove the seat and you'll have access to the trunk area.
If access isn't a problem, get yourself a plastic panel removal tool set from parts store and make sure it's not cold when you remove the panels as they'll be more likely to break from being brittle from the cold. Take your time.
SOURCE: Trunk will not latch
try putting washers under the bottom catch to lift up slightly maybe not pushing latch up to lock in place

Within the little round punchout, I stuck a screwdriver in and moved around any parts I could until I lit the latch mechanism. I hear a pop and gave a push. Lucky I guess.

You need to replace the Latch assembly part thats located inside the trunk
Thanks
SOURCE: hood latch won't release
This has happened to me several times, this will take two people, but all you need to do is have one person pull the hood release, while person number 2 pushes down on the hood, and then pulls up...that ought to do the trick

i used a screw where the other one broke off to hold it in place, it needs to be a short one like a tek screw if you know what that is just drill it out first so the screw does'nt snap the plastic
