I have an engine code issue with my 2000 Buick LeSabre. the engine code stated a tcc solenoid is shorted or failed. i need to know how difficult this part is to replace for the novice "backyard mechanic?"

I don,t reccommend doing this your self as the k-frame will need dropped and the trans case will need split to access the solenoid also when I have to do this I will not do it on the ground I use a lift or I dont do it.

This is a transmission issue, TCC is Torque Converter Control, the solenoid is inside the trans, unless you are a well versed technician I would leave this to the transmission experts, you might try premium assistance for someone that can provide more detailed step by step repair procedures if you are determined to do the repair yourself.

Hi, The PO742 is a transmission code representing the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) release switch. To throw this code, there is either an electrical, mechanical, or hydraulic issue.
If you are extremely mechanically inclined, you will need to check the TCC solenoid, verify the connections of internal wiring harness, and perform an overall diagnosis of the transmission's condition, which will require removal of the transmission.
Given that you have a 4T65-E Transmission I would highly recommend taking it to a good transmission shop, this is not a 'quick' fix issue. Good luck and Godspeed.
If A/C fuse blows open you have a short to ground, youll need to inspect the wires if wire and connection are good then your problenm is the clutch of your A/C shorting internally, youll also need to know if the
A/C compressor is failing internally
The code is for a TCC (Torque Convertor Clutch) solenoid problem.
Chances are pretty good the problem is the wiring where it goes into
the transmission or the TCC solenoid itself which is in the valve body
There was a bulliten released from Ford about
three years ago about this code being set after trans overhauls. In
Ford's program stratagies, the P07xx codes are for computer detected
failures due to mechanical responses. The P17xx code series are
computer identified electrical failures. This code you are getting gets
set when the computer does not see the what it would expect from Torque
Converter lock-up. The most common problem for this (and is even stated
in the bulliten I mentioned) has to do with a seal on the input shaft
of the trans. The seal either gets damaged when the torque converter is
installed or it is accidentally left out during the rebuild. There is
not much that you personally can do, but at least you can understand
how to best procede.
But you will most likely end up removing that cover to inspect the harness
that goes to all the solenoids and then to inspect the valve body and
the TCC solenoid itself. If you have a multimeter then you could ohm
through the harness and even the solenoid. I have found that most of
the time this code was produced because of the solenoid itself. But it
could be the circuits to it also. There is a big connector an top of the
trans that goes into the trans and the internal harness inspect that
connector for any corrosion or damaged pins or wires.
TCC solenoid circuit failure during on-board diagnostic.
TCC solenoid circuit fails to provide voltage drop across solenoid.
Circuit open or shorted or PCM drive failure during on-board diagnostic.
Failed ON - engine runs rough/vehicle shudder, engine stalls in DRIVE (2nd, 3rd or 4th) at low idle speeds. (Short circuit). Failed OFF - torque converter clutch never engages (Open circuit) (MIL on).

code - po1860 tcc pwm solenoid circuit malfunction 4t80- E conditions.5 possible causes 1. tcc solenoid control circuit is open or shorted to ground. 2.tcc solenoid control circuit is shorted to system power b+. 3.tcc solenoid power circuit is open check the trans fuse. 4.tcc solenoid is damaged or has failed. 5.pcm has failed.
Code P1887, as you probably by now know, is set when there is an issue with the torque converter clutch engagement and disengagement. When this code is set, it inhibits TCC operation, could cause issues with the shift adaptive strategies and possibly issues with 4th gear (Overdrive) operation.
The unfortunate news is that you have the 4T65E transmission in this vehicle and the TCC switch/solenoid is part of the valve body and the valve body is on the side of the transmission (drivers side) and would require at least the lowering of the sub frame to get enough clearance to remove the side cover and to get to the valve body. It is really an involved repair and would not be for the faint of heart nor those with little to no mechanical experience.
I dont know where you are located, but if you are anywhere near Indiana I would visit www.grandprixforums.net and sign up there and post up your issue there. Its an online community for Grand Prix's and other vehicles that use the GM 3800 engine. There is a gentleman on there that goes by the screen name of Trannyman95 and he makes his living rebuilding 4T65E's among others and is highly regarded as a top notch transmission builder.
