MY SRS INDICATOR LIGHT IS ON IN MY 1997 HONDA CIVIC. I'VE BEEN TOLD IT WILL COST ABOUT 1K JUST FOR DIAGNOSIS. ANYONE KNOW IF THIS LIGHT REFER TO THE AIR BAGS, SEAT BELTS, BOTH, OR SOMETHING ELSE?
Thanks very much for your help with both of my questions (the SRS light and Timing Chain). I have to find my manual and hopefully I'll have a timing chain, and not a belt, as that doesn't need to be replaced. The car is 11 now (I was told it could be a '97 or '98 since I bought it in July?) and needs a little more TLC as we go forward. I wish the air conditioner could keep up with the Florida heat. I've had it checked but there's nothing wrong. Just old and tired I guess. Again, thanks very much for taking the time to help me out. Thanks very much for your help with both of my questions (the SRS light and Timing Chain). My 97 Civic EX had the same issue. SRS light came on & I took it to a local shop to see what was wrong. They couldn't pull the codes & said to take it to a Honda dealership for service. Took it to a second local shop specializing in Hondas. They couldn't pull the codes either. Finally took it to the Honda dealership. They couldn't pull the codes. They replaced the SRS control unit ($500+) and still couldn't pull the codes. Turns out that my alternator was putting out 16 amps and had blown the SRS control unit. They replaced the alternator ($450+) and the SRS indicator light went off! Turns out that the alternator was the issue the whole time.My 97 Civic EX had the same issue. The SRS light refers to your airbags. You can try reseting the light by going to the webpage that I will give you. If it comes back on after you reset it then there is a problem with your SRS system and you will need to have it diagnosed as your airbags will not function when the light is on. Here is the website:

Hello! when the light comes on it means the air beg system has a fsult and, in an accident, the bags will not deploy...very unsafe situation...Typically, one or more of these DTCs will be set: SRS DTC 15-1 (faulty
OPDS unit or OPDS not initialized)... SRS DTC 15-2 (faulty side airbag
indicator circuit)... SRS DTC 15-3 (faulty OPDS sensor)...To ensure
continued reliability with the OPDS: American Honda is extending the
warranty on the OPDS unit and the OPDS sensor to 10 years or150,000
miles, whichever occurs first.you will need to take the car to the
dealer to have it checked to see if this is the problem that is causing
the light to come on, there should not be a charge to check it if it is
the condition that is covered by the extended warranty. It takes about
3 minutes to determine if the light is on for the OPDS or if it is some
other cause. If it is caused by something else then the dealer will
want to charge you for further diagnosis. At that point you can say
'no' if you don't want to go any further....my guess is it will be covered
under the extended warranty.. Also, it is not a fuse and the airbags will
not go off when the light SRS light is on; whenever the SRS light is on
the airbag system is disabled. Unless you have the special tool, you
can't just turn the light off; even if you did, it would come back on
the next time you drove the car...Guru....saailer
SRS stands for Supplimental Restraint System. It's a fancy term for the airbag system. If the airbags have not actually been deployed in a crash, the indicator can be triggered if you turn on the ignition with part of the SRS system disconnected (for instance if you removed a seat and disconnected the wiring harness underneath), or if a component has failed.
This refers to your cars air bag (supplemental restraint system), and indicates (when lighted) that there is a problem with the system. The light will go on briefly when the car is started, this is normal, and serves as a check that the light is operating properly. If it remains on, it indicates a problem, and the system should be checked asap, as it may not work if the car is involved in an accident.
Well thats one of two things. First the srs light stands for Supplemental Restraint System or in otherwords the airbag system now the light being on could be because its due for a maintance check up or there could be a problem with the system
Try his from someone that had the same problem...
"I have the same SRS light problem. Comes on when I start the car and stays on the whole time. I called American Honda (1-800-999-1009) and gave them my VIN number. Apparently there is a warranty extension: 10 yrs or 157,500 miles, whichever comes first on the OPDS (occupant position detector sensor) unit or OPDS sensor which can cause the SRS light to come on. Going to take it to a Honda dealer next week. If that is the problem then it will be fixed for free. If not I have to pay for the diagnosis fee which is about $100 and then however much it cost to fix the problem."
I'm having the same problem, my SRS light is on too. Just so you know, I just got a thing in the
mail from Honda for my 2001 Honda Civic DX Sedan for a recall on the
airbag system (SRS is part of the same system as airbags, I think). Hope
this gives you a bit more info!!
if ur seatbelts are defective, it wont cost u anything. take it back to the dealer and tell them u want to have ur srs light looked at and trouble codes pulled. the seatbelts are lifetime warranty as long as the vehicle hasnt been in an accident
