My fuel pump has been replaced twice already and im noticing when my fuel gets lower then a quarter of a tank it makes a knocking noise or like a humming sound as if its struggling to get gas when i drive. also now im experiencing sputtering when i first start my car and idle in drive or reverse it will **** and want to die. please help, i would like to know something before i spend too much to get it fixed. thanks!

if you have not changed the fuel filter, do so now. and if this does not remedy the situation. change the plugs and wires also check ****** fluid because you said it only does this in drive or reverse. sounds like the problem is, its starving for fuel, change fuel filter. it would also be good to run some injector fluid in it to clean the injectors after replacing filter.

Before listening to someone telling you to replace plugs & wires an filter an injector cleaner etc. An when that doesn't fix the problem they say the MAF sensor or coolant temp sensor ,throttle position sensor . Spend a 100 bucks for diagnostics an then know for sure whats wrong . So many sensors an electronic's on you vehicle . See this guy above isn't a tech . back yard shade tree probably . He is all ready telling change the filter an if that doesn't work change the plug's an wires an this an that .
Have scan data checked first ,before replacing any parts . I have thirty years experience , Dealer ship , independent repair shop , own shop , mobile diagnostic tech . I charge $24.50 to hook up scan tool ,factory scan tool , an view engine sensor data . Could most likely be a bad or dirty mass air flow sensor . O2 sensor .

Internal combustion engines requires 3 things... fuel, air, and spark. You do not have enough of one or more of these. If the wires and plugs are old, change them.  Air filter, same thing.  Fuel filter can also clog up with stuff after awhile. When you take a look at the air filter check where the air comes from.  It is possible a little critter has built a home and blocked the air flow (rare, but, it has happened).

SOURCE: Sputtering and hesitation when started

Change the fuel filter and this ought to solve the problem. Also, pour a pint of fuel injector clearer into your fuel tank periodically.

2.4L '95 Toyota Tacoma sputters out when trying to get going.

when did it last run good, last week, last year or nobody knows/
that is good one, odd for sure that. NO scan tools work 1995 ,
2.4L stick shift. M/T
well the engine has no idea at all what gear you are in.
so my guess is, yes engine is overloading, (reverse is better )
means engine power is super super weak.
because REV has a higher numerical RATIO gear. than 1st.
so seem have more power. in REV.
sputters up is not a norm car term, but can me 2 things
  • gross engine misfire.
  • or the clutch slips. (RPM Rises but MPH goes slower.?
the engine dies/ DEAD, 0 RPM? that be>>>>
MY BEST GUESS BLIND, IS ENGINE IS:
  • ENGINE IS FLOODING , SMELL FUEL? injector leaks.
  • SPARK IS BAD,
  • OR FUEL FLOW LOSS. LEAN BURN STALLS.
  • Bad fuel, (old fuel was there before or now?).
there are lots of actual caused (parts bad)
spark parts all are old aND NO GOOD NOW. PLUGS/WIRES HV,CAP ROTOR HAS DISTRIBUTOR? YES IT IS.
BAD FUEL OR LOW FUEL PRESSURE OR CLOGGED FUEL OR AIR FILTERS.
all above assumes actual engine is ok, compression tests pass.
that is all I can figure out , not seen or driven me.
I can no see RPM and MPH dials or hear the engine sputter.

My 1996 jeep Cherokee xj will sputter out and die when I put it in drive but when I put it in reverse it will stay running and driving

my guess is the gearing , that reverse has is very low.
and with lower gearing a weaker engine can run
id bet you if you use your right foot, on the throttle as you
go to drive, it will move, or use L gear.
the sputter, is not related to the transmission
Sputter is gross misfiring of the engine, 4.0L?? what engine?
and the top cause of that. is not getting a tune up.
spark plugs. ever do those in 10 long years.'
or spark wires>?
filters, fluids and spark? a tune up.
the Jeep runs a map sensor, so does not sputter with air leaks.
the jeep IAC can stick. and not hold an idle ,in drive.
but you can with a fast right foot, if not , its gross misfire for sure.
your right foot is not gas its air
when you press the throttle you add air and the EFI matches air with fuel. in that order
so if it still sputters, is not the lack of air. see?> spark is next,.

for 100 years folks avoid tuneups, is that you? the classic cause?

Ok I Have a 1999 pontiac grand am gt coupe. i have an engine sputtering problem when i am driving but when the car is idle it is running fine. what might be my problem and how can i fix this?

you could have spark plugs that need changing or bad plug wires.the fuel injectors could be dirty not allowing enough fuel to be burned.at idle there isn`t enough load to cause a noticeable miss fire.

Im getting no heat in my 1999 Pontiac Grand Am, I just replaced the lower and upper in take gaskets due to them leaking and the thermostat, I have bleed the system numerous times and I was told that I have...

Put your heater temperature control in the max position on(this opens the valve for coolant flow through the heater core). Top off the radiator and the coolant resevoir. Make sure the cap is on tight and bring the engine up to operating temperature. Shut off engine, allow to cool, and top off the radiator again. Repeat these steps until you are sure it will not take anymore coolant. Drive the car at speed for 5 or 10 miles and recheck again when cool. It takes awhile to work air out of the system with multiple openings of the thermostat.
